An insanely wonderful magic system and some really exciting and descriptive use of how it is used. I think the general plot feels rooted in colonialism. Two of the three main female characters endured SA in order to “grow”, something I think we could’ve done without.
Graphic: Rape, Sexual assault

I couldn’t handle a bondage sex scene.
Published in 2004, it's the first of a six part series. Tave, the hero, is an ordinary young boy who is thrust into extraordinary circumstances. He's even less than ordinary, since he lacks the magic powers others have, the control of the elemental forces of nature. Still, he always manages to end up at some pivotal moment for the plot. These seem a little too coincidental at times, but are still believable.
The setting is a world similar to ours, but a little different. They have magic, but also have kings and emperors, villages and fiefdoms, and an army very similar to the Roman Legion.
There are a number of sub-plots interwoven throughout the book, and the story switches between the points of view of several characters, but we felt that it all worked. The main characters are well developed too, with a hero that has several flaws, and an antagonist with a few redeeming characteristics.

i don't think i care for jim's writing style. i don't think it's bad, just not for me. probably would have frothed this if i had discovered him as a ten year old
Super disappointed in this. Time of death 54%. I count books as read if I read at least 51%. I made it to 54% before it was clear this was a rape fetish fantasy and my disappointment and anger at Butcher for that is immense.
At the moment I quit, a rapist was calmly explaining to another woman about the tactics another woman in the process of being gang raped was using to avoid too much violence aside from the rape.
The book opens with rape, is filled with lust for abused women and then this trash.
A damn shame.

I liked this book because I like fantasy. But there are some fantasy cliches in this book. Like the unknown orphan boy who will be the hero. Oh and this orphan boy has a name that essentially tells you his origins if you know anything about Latin. Some of the other characters have descriptive names, like "Amara" and "Odiana". There's nothing like knowing immediately if you're going to love or hate a character just from reading their names.
There is also some interesting magic in this book. I've heard it resulted from the author trying to incorporate Pokemon into the book. Whether the furies are supposed to be similar to Pokemon or not, they added an unexpected dimension to the characters, their actions, abilities, and their preconceptions. Additionally, the Marat are relatively unique characters; not just one dimensional enemies.
