My least favorite of the series but still great
Nothing triggers my resentment as much as comparisons to the MMC's ex, dear or alive. It's too close to my personal experience for me to easily brush it off.
How the heck did I still like this book?
Idk. I was rooting for Ilsa to get her happy ever after. The abuse she went through from her ex made her skittish and vulnerable but she still tried to be strong. She got my heart because of that.
Apollo was an asshat for the most part but I'm glad he came to his senses. They got pretty hot and heavy early (arguably hotter than the other books).
I loved the attention from the guys (as a whychoose girlie) when they were traveling after Apollo left her to them. She totally deserved that and she was sorely needing the friendship they freely gave her. Although one of the guys falling for her and giving a love triangle angle was a bit cruel. This book should have been at least an MFM romance.

Every book in this series is the same book with different characters.
9/4/13: KA announced that she's working on the next installments in Fantasyland and The Three! Can't wait!

Well I have to say I almost didn't read this one because of the reviews. And frankly stories where the hero is a grieving widower are a turn off for me. Too much angst usually that ends up somehow tainting the new love, but Kristen Ashley has a talent for wringing your emotions but never pushing it too far. You feel the progression of their love as they get to know each other without demeaning the first love that has passed, yet not feeling like that first love will overshadow their new love in any way. I bet that's a difficult trick to pull off for a writer!

in retrospect, the only one of this series that I revisit is the 3rd book. I find my face scrunches up in a sneer when I think of Apollo. I didn't think he grovelled enough... or at all really. Total douche bag. Instead of beating her like her first husband (his alternate on Earth), he abuses her mentally over and over. She calls him on this, and while he does apologize nicely, she forgives WAY too quick. What a doormat! Total 'turn the other cheek' ninny.
Then their HEA ending is usurped by the MCs from the previous books and some nonsensical evil doing by the OTT evil doers.
