It’s beyond astounding and terrifying just how prescient this novella is today as it was eighty years ago when it was first published. Time is a flat circle apparently. So depressingly accurate to the nature of governing authority and what it means to have power.

“And yet the animals never gave up hope. More, they never lost, even for an instant, their sense of honour and privilege in being members of Animal Farm.”

This was my first time reading a classic just for myself and I was surprised by how easy it was to read. Orwell’s writing is very straightforward and to the point but there’s so much meaning between the lines.

I found myself really caring about the animals (apart from the pigs of course), especially Boxer. His loyalty and what happened to him genuinely made my heart ache and that emotional reaction told me just how powerful this book is. It is a short book, but incredibly powerful.

Animal Farm might seem like a simple story on the surface but it says a lot about power, control, and how easily ideals can be twisted. I get now why it’s considered a classic and I honestly think people will still be reading it for a long time to come.
