Animal Farm. Written by George Orwell in 1945.  If you don't know this book then you might be a Gen Z or Gen Alpha because all Boomers and Millennials were forced to read this growing up.  If I remember correctly, I read in my Freshman year of High School.

Typically a book that has talking animals is a pretty light-hearted book, but not this one.  It is an allegory about barn animals overthrowing their human oppressors, to ultimately symbolize Stalinism.  This whole book really should be thought of as one big warning to the people and what can happen with certain people in power.

I chose to reread it because of the current political temperature in the U.S.  Currently Animal Farm is banned in China and Cuba and has been challenged for many years in the United States.  The CIA even purchased the rights from the Orwell Estate in 1954 to create a movie  where they could change plot points and the ending in an effort to "combat the culture of communism" during the Cold War.  What I find concerning is how close we are coming in reality to the pigs in the book walking on two feet...One Pig clearly being controlled by another.

Reasons I cannot give this a 5 star even though it is a classic and I think every person should read it; I was mad the whole time, I wanted the story to go differently, I wanted a character to rebel.  I feel like that would've sent a stronger message if we are warning about dictatorship.  I

Animal Farm is a brilliant political allegory that shows how power corrupts and ideals are twisted. It’s sharp, concise, and impactful, using animals to expose real-world systems of control and manipulation.

Even though the characters are symbolic, the story is gripping and the message hits hard. It’s a short read, but it leaves a lasting impression.

I genuinely don’t know how to review this. It’s a classic and social commentary on the Russian Revolution and the rise of communism in the 1940s. But also, I think it’s more of a social commentary on the greed of men. No matter how much people strive for equality, when someone gets a taste of power, they get a hunger that makes them become the enemy. Perhaps that’s a grim take on humanity, but I’m feeling grim lately 😬

Required reading. A pointed reminder to trust yourself and not to allow yourself to be gaslit by authority, even if they paint themselves to be trustworthy. Question every action, every policy, every explanation.

I think it is wonderful that explores themes of oppression, power, censorship and tyranny.
