this was, indeed, more soap opera than mystery, but that doesn't mean that i enjoyed it any less. it's a fascinating read, i'd say, and it's very different from christie's other works, but also still very similar. i would say she goes in depth with her characters for, perhaps, the first time for a non-detective character and it's very interesting to read. i am reminded of a phrase that p. g. wodehouse's jeeves uses a lot, "the psychology of the individual"; i would say that this book captures that very well when it comes to mike.

speaking of, i really liked the character writing here. usually christie's character writing isn't remarkable per say, but it's not bad. the characters are developed enough to seem like humans, but you don't get to know much about them past the setting of the mystery. past the setting of the murder, you know nothing. here, however, you get to know, really know, all of the characters and it's fascinating.

i find that i cannot talk about this further without spoilers so i will end my review here. this is unorthodox-christie, but i really like it. i'm not exactly sure if others will share my sentiment or not, but i would say that christie fans would probably like this.

Told in the first person. Body count was slow to get going and easier to predict than some of Christie's classics.

My initial thoughts were this book was not sounding very much like an Agatha Christie one. I haven’t heard about this book specifically and somehow it’s brilliant. Accessible writing and carefully crafted characters and scenery. Absolutely loved it.

Excellent prose that stays interesting.

2.5/5
I really wish I liked this more. Some people praise this as one of Christie’s best: idk about that.

If your looking for a Christie book with a gloomy atmosphere, I’d recommend and then there were none much more. This book comes off way more as a thriller, which is fine, but even by thriller standards it’s not amazing.

it took WAYYY to long to get started, and I guess when it was finally getting into the meat and potatoes of the story, it wasn’t what I had come to expect from Agatha christie.

And the final twist, without spoiling it, is FAR to similar both in situation and substance to another famous Christie twist. I won’t say which one in case you want to read this book but it’s one of her most popular books.

It’s still extremely well written, with great character work, and I wasn’t bored while reading it. Which is why it earns 2.5

Probably gonna be one of the biggest let downs I’ve read this year

(By the way there’s actually a tv movie where Ms. Marple is the detective and she is in this story: I think it would’ve worked much better that way)

Agatha really phoned it in with this one. So flipping boring. NOTHING HAPPENS.
