This was a slow cooked dish that in my haste to consume, almost overlooked the the brilliant work of a master chef.
Endless Night has been on my radar for a while, it is highly rated among Christie fans and I see now, deservedly so. Somehow I expected a dark, disturbing mystical story when I started, and when I read a over two-thirds of it, following an apparent romance foreboding something sinister, I felt a bit underwhelmed.
The final stretch amazingly reconfigured my view of the story, all the little hints of the well thought out story I wasn't able to grasp suddenly came flooding in.I have not enjoyed previous books employing unreliable narrators, but my goodness, when it clicks, it is gold.
The meal took its time on the stove, but what was served was ultimately worth the wait. A unique examination of desire, of possession of said desire and the cost of it all, viewed through the eyes of a killer who couldn't be overcome his deadly nature even when tempered by love .
Some are born to sweet delight.
Some are born to endless night.

A delightful thriller/suspense from Dame Christie. Could not put this put book down. Slow burn with a questionable but bumbling, easy-going narrator driving the story forward.

I was hooked from the get-go. Thought I was headed for a cliffhanger finale, but instead hit a gentle slope. The twists were underwhelming and the ending fell flat. Basically a lukewarm overall reading experience. Not Christie's finest.

Well that was… unexpected. Every so often I find a Christie that breaks from her usual pattern and this was definitely one of those. It starts off fairly standardly and then takes a sudden hard left about 3/4 of the way through with a rollercoaster drop at the end, so buckle up. I absolutely hated the main character from page one and his self-important ramblings made the first few chapters a slog. I am glad I stuck it out. It is dark and gothic and, while it still pales in comparison to my favorite Christie novel And Then There Were None, it is definitely worth a read.
