What did I read? I thought I knew where this book was going, and then...what?

Up until the last couple of chapters, I was all set to give this a solid 3 stars. It kept me interested enough, but the mystery took too long to get going, and I didn't like the main character. Plus, it was all a little predictable.
And then...
What???
I'm still unsure whether I really liked Endless Night, but I've got to give it 4 stars because I haven't been that surprised by a plot twist in a long time.

Rounding up from 3.5. The first half of this was a drag for me. I was ready to give it a 2.5 (maybe a 3) when the twist finally hit and it was a doozy. It made me appreciate the writing a lot more. That being said, I really don’t love that the only part of the story I feel like I really enjoyed was the last 20 pages..

Agatha Christie at her best.

I enjoyed every second of "Endless Night" — I was spellbound, in fact.

And even though I guessed the twist halfway through the book, it didn't make it any less enjoyable. Actually, I love all of the foreshadowing and hints.

This is a touch different than most of Christie's books - and it's gooooood. I do love a good unreliable narrator. I knew something was up, but I didn't quite guess the whole thing. There is some casual racism (against gypsies, and well, all other foreigners too, because England), especially in the beginning - mostly to add atmosphere and gothic-y-ness. Otherwise super-fun and enjoyable.

Probably my most favorite Agatha Christie novel so far. She was masterful in her obfuscation of the deeper plot until the final reveal. I listened to the audiobook narrated by Hugh Frazier who also did a masterful job in his portrayal of the first person narrator, especially given the developments of the book. I look forward to re-reading this book in the future as I think there will be so many hidden clues to find now that I know “the twist.” Would highly recommend to anyone who enjoys mystery.

Chris found this one for me in the local Little Free Library and since I read my first Christie at the start of the year (Toward Zero) he thought I might enjoy this. Although I've only read the one before, and seen countless films, TV dramas and plays, I could tell this one would be different - although not necessarily in a good way.
SpoilerI understand why the first person narration was necessary though, and the use of good old racism shown in fear and distrust of the gypsy woman (although I half think Christie was making fun of the bigots herself!). I was also hoping far more would come from the eerie character of Santonix.

Not the most satisfying ending, but a fun read.
