The atmosphere is top notch. Felt like a Shirley Jackson or Daphne du Maurier novel tbh. This is more adult that most of Mrs. Christie's Fare. Love the twist and the gothic elements.

One of her best. Not a happy book, easy to read, lightly written ... but anything but light in content. A book about the darkness and evil that encroaches ... I read it many decades ago, and never re-read it because it is anything but light and charming. Too dark and disturbing when I first read it, but now I appreciate the brilliance of the writing and the character portraits.

Now I understand why they call Agatha Christie the Queen of Mystery, that twist at the end of the book had me thinking, wait what, is this chapter suppose to be here. No it better not end like this, what the hell. But some people are born to sweet delight, and some to Endless Night. :) truly enjoyed this book

I think I've read some of the best and some of the worst of Agatha Christie this summer- this is the best. I won't mince words here. This is undoubtedly my favorite Agatha Christie book and perhaps one of my favorite books to date. I realize that Agatha Christie isn't often recognized as "intelligent literature" or often discussed in the category of "greatest authors" except in the sheer volume of books sold (she is right behind Shakespeare and the Bible), and I can understand why. Many of her stories have difficulty pairing theme and story well.
Nevertheless, Ms. Christie can be a force of sheer subversive genius. In this book, she lays out themes like xenophobia, societal standing, economic disparity, emotional manipulation, pride, greed, and the inertia of criminality. I don't want to spoil it, but I will say that if you enter this book expecting her usual formula, you will be shocked. It is beautifully written and surprises you in the best way possible.

The Amazing Book Club of Doom book for September, 2022. Quite atypical from Christie's usual books, and a fun book to discuss. Worth checking out!
