Endless Night

Agatha Christie

This is a later book, and it shows. Lots more description and introspection and less dialogue. It's not going to be one of my favorites, but the premise is an interesting one IF you can get past all of the racism slung at the Roma. Le sigh.

I just...yeah. Problematic fave and all that.

When I read Christie's autobiography, I'll be interested to see at which point she goes from typing to dictating. I think the switch made for the harder read with less dialogue. This one does make sense, however, unlike Postern of Fate. Bless.

I found the entirety of the book up until the big reveal to be very sluggish and boring, there didnt even seem to be any mystery to solve even when the murder happened. Lots of red herrings but i felt like they were cheaply used. Even though the plot twist was very underwhelming and so cliche and obvious that i didnt even think to consider it, i do think agatha christie wrote this as well as anybody could have given the premise. Maybe i was expecting more of a mystery to be solved since it is agatha christie, and maybe i was hoping it would all unravel in a satisfying way given the tedious crescendo of the book up until the absolute last second. All in all it wasn’t completely a waste of time, but it was definitely very disappointing. If anybody else had written this story i would rate it a 1 most likely.

One of Agatha's books that is not a traditional murder mystery. Endless Night is one of those stories that's difficult to talk about without spoiling, but I thoroughly enjoyed its leading characters and the outcome. It may not have as many hooks (at least initially) as her more beloved stories; there's no ensemble trapped in a place, but instead the cast feels very believable as real people...which makes where it goes all the more memorable. I need to read more of her catalog to gauge a full opinion on where it stacks up, but I do recommend it to those interested in seeing her do something quite different, and I think I can see why it was one of her personal favorites.
