I started this book once, made it a few chapters in and couldn’t finish it. Picked it up again six months later and was grateful for it. It’s slower than other Christie stories, but better developed in many ways once you get past your initial expectations. The twist at the end really gets you. Keep looking over your shoulder …

This has to be my least favorite Agatha Christie book so far:/
While I read her stories looking for her unique style of plotting very complicated crimes and making me question until the last minute who the criminal actually is and how they managed to commit the murder, this story was 90% backstory and build up for the crime which only happens at like page 200 of the 300 pages book.
There was also absolutely no complicated plot around the main murder incident itself, it was literally explained in like 3-5 sentences at the end of the story.
I think Christie attempted a different style of writing in this story where she focuses more on showing the motives and character of the killer rather than the technicalities and details of the murder itself. While I understand that some people might prefer that style I personally found it way less interesting.

This standalone was completely different from the first Tommy & Tuppence mystery I read previously and enjoyed. I wasn't expecting a dark and twisty tale, so this one surprised me. I enjoyed it though and found myself drawn in completely. The eerie tone and overall mood of the story drove the plot, and contributed to the overall unsettling story that unfolded. The legend of Gypsy's Acre will no doubt haunt you for some time but it is well worth a read. Another excellent discovery courtesy of this year's Malice Domestic conference!
