dark mysterious slow-paced

I give it only one star because I truly disliked this book. But for writing, this book deserves five stars. Christie really made one feel like you were actually reading Mike's account. The sentences were somehow wrong, and some of the word choices made you wonder if everything was quite right with him. In the end, I wasn't too surprised that he was mad. It fit with the sort of sentences he used. The feeling Endless Night gave me was remarkable. Well done, but gruesome.

Just finished the November choice for #readchristie2023 and what an unexpected treat this was.

I was getting used to the lightness of the Marple and Poirot murder mysteries (although I never guess whodunnit) but this is a very different story.

A gothic romance perhaps? A dark tale where pure evil lies at the heart of it.

The novel is narrated by a young man called Michael Rogers. He's from a poor background and flits from job to job but he has a dream of owning a beautiful house specially designed by his architect friend and living there with a beautiful wife.

The site of Gipsy's Acre in a beautiful countryside village would be ideal and when he meets an American heiress who loves the location as much as him and they fall for each other despite their different stations in life then perhaps the dream life is possible after all.

But Gipsy's Acre is a place with a history of accidents. A place of superstition in the village and when a local gipsy warns them away gabbling about curses and death then maybe it's not the ideal life after all.

Michael is an intriguing character and very well written. He doesn't want to heed the warnings and there's a sense of unease and dread throughout as events move slowly throughout the story leading to tragedy and surprising twists.

I had read the book many years ago, and didn't remember much about it. I recently read it again for a reading challenge and really enjoyed it this time around. The book is narrated by a working class British man who falls in love with an American girl who he learns is very wealthy. They come across a piece of land where they want to build a house even though it's said to be cursed. The rest of the story has a tense, foreboding atmosphere with a shocking ending! If you're looking for a unique Agatha Christie book, Endless Night is the book for you.

This was the first book I’ve read by Agatha Christie. I liked it! It definitely wasn’t what I was expecting and I’ll be honest, the end at the end did get me. I’m only scoring it a 3.75 because I did feel that it was a little slow to get in to.

It's a classic for a reason. Creepy, fast-moving, surprising.
