Endless Night

Agatha Christie

3.68 AVERAGE

The HUGEST exposition ever. Where was Christie's editor?

She also recycled an entire premise and a character--identical first name, occupation, AND relation to the victim. If you're familiar with Christie's more popular novels, you'll have come across it.

Disappointing altogether. Agatha Christie's romances are generally very weak--characters falling in love and marrying in a systematic and abrupt fashion--but this one was especially painful to read as well. The mystery was too predictable. Not her best.

Set in autumn and a perfect read for October. This has many constructs I enjoy in a book. Christie delivers again.

Agatha Christie thought this was one of her favorite novels.
This was predictable by page 50 once the scene was set. I was waiting for the twist, it never came.

In this Christie gives voice to a charming man with big dreams of owning a beautiful house and married to the right woman. And it seems one day that dreams come true when he meets Fenella Goodman at the site of Gipsy’s Acre.

Having read many of Christie’s works, this one is not unfamiliar. Here, the reader is meant to be the detective and the clues abound if one is observant. The setting is more modern being set in post war era and she does nail the dialogue here.

Endless Night is more like an Alfred Hitchcock thriller than Christie's usual detective mysteries. While the story held my interest, I think the story could have been told in a much more compressed way. The narrative in the first 2/3 of the book dragged on a bit and had some amount of unnecessary repetition.

I know it's historic but I was not expect the G slur like 100 times in the first 2 chapters. It was a lot.
