Mike, a young working class lad, meets Ellie, a rich American, and it's love at first sight. The pair marry and build their dream property on land that is supposed to have a gypsy curse on it.  What could possibly go wrong?  Quite a lot, as it turns out, but you have to trawl through loads of chapters before you find out how and why. The crime doesn't happen until relatively late in the book.

I liked the dark atmosphere. It's much more sinister in tone than the usual Christie.  There are some unusual characters, like the mysterious architect and the scary (but stereotypical) gypsy woman who keeps popping up and uttering threats.

It's quite slow-paced for a Christie and I admit I was bored for a long time, frustrated  by the tedious details of the couple's married life.  I kept waiting for something to happen and if it had been my first Agatha Christie,  I may have given up on it.  But I  have read enough of her books now to know that things are rarely what they seem to be.  When the twists come, they are usually clever ones. True to form, Christie springs a huge surprise. Sometimes I can guess how things are going to turn out but no way did I see this one coming.

I'm glad I stuck with it until the end because once you get there, you realise why you have had to wade through all the other seemingly dull stuff. It's not my favourite Christie but it's still worth reading.

I enjoyed this book...and I definitely didn't see the ending coming. Perhaps I'm just not astute enough, but I was quite surprised by the twist.
