It's the sickest one I have read of Agatha Christie.

The plot in the beginning is too slow and somewhat boring. It is as if you were asked or even forced to listen to this ambitious person. I wonder how I could be glued to this narrative.

Things are getting more interesting in the middle part and upsetting (in a good way) in the end. Spiced up with romance, myth and ghost stories, but it's murder anyway.

Ok! So here Iam after finishing the last works of Agatha Christie! ( I still have lots of her works pending to read) .This tale, right from the start sounded different ( not the usual investigation style) and through the first half , I thought , did the queen of mystery write a romantic novel ? The pace was slow as compared to her other works . The last few pages were quite good and the twist was a 'Sweet Delight'.

'Some are born to Sweet delight
some are born to Endless Night'

The tale is narrated by A chauffeur ,Mr Michael Rogers who wants to build a beautiful house on Gipsy's acre inspite of warnings from an old Woman Mrs.Lee that the land is cursed. Rogers gets the house done by Mr Santonix who is a great architect and also a close friend of Rogers. He meets a girl Ellie who turns out to be Rich and falls in love with her, and eventually marries her. She doesn't have any blood relations though she has a step mother, three uncles and a trustworthy friend Greta who can do anything for Ellie. In fact, Ellie says , it wouldn't have been possible to marry Mike if not for Greta!!
The newly weds start their lives in their sweet little house. When Ellie sprains an ankle, Greta comes over to stay with them, but Rogers despises the idea. Many a times, Ellie asks Rogers if he doesnt like Greta but he simply says that he likes her but just feels Ellie is obsessed with her.
Things start going haywire when Ellie turns up dead, eventually followed by Lee and Claudia (Ellie's horse riding partner) . Is the land really cursed? Who is responsible for the murders? I don't want to give away the last bit of twist for it would make the novel least interesting !! Grab a copy and iam sure the last few pages will make you gasp!

Not your usual Christie—no detective, no deaths (until about 2/3 of the way through!) but lots of foreboding in that popular 60s/70s Gothic way. Spooky house (or at least a house in a spooky location), romance between rich and poor (but gender-reversed, for a fun change), even literally gypsies leaping out of the woods to warn "Danger! There is death there!" (I'm not joking), so very Gothic indeed. (Irrelevent aside—I love how "Gothic" keeps changing its meaning over the decades, from architecture, to supernatural novels, to romances, to teen-fashion subculture).

So I wasn't sure at first, since part of me was thinking "is this going anywhere?" —but it did, and I liked where it went, so it all paid off. Phew!

I've been re-reading (or reading) all the Christies that I think I may have missed. I'd thought I'd read them all, but both this one and Third Girl, so far, didn't ping any memories, so I somehow skipped over them, or have gotten really old.

(Note: 5 stars = amazing, wonderful, 4 = very good book, 3 = decent read, 2 = disappointing, 1 = awful, just awful. I'm fairly good at picking for myself so end up with a lot of 4s).
