very easy to read. had some issues with the writing, but that’s probably a product of it being targeted toward younger teens, and not overly picky sixteen-year-olds. plot was compelling, and the twist—though predictable—added variety to the story. author is rlly developing her characters, making sure to add nuance… i was glad she chose not to gloss over day and june’s very different upbringings.

i think the romance is a bit forced, and the book’s characters do suffer from being pushed into roles that only serve to further the romance or create conflict… and i also think that some of the romances were unnecessary. anden is like. twenty. crushing on a fifteen y/o. creepy.

Once again!! Amazing

I don't know why this took me so long to get through b/c I loved it. however the cliff hanger of an end is a little frustrating. Can't wait for the next one.
adventurous fast-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix

Middle book syndrome is a common concern of most authors writing trilogies. No matter how well the first book does, there's always the fear that the next installment will drag, or over-explain, or lack new development.

Marie Lu's debut novel "Legend" landed her on the New York Times bestseller list, and if that isn't a lot to live up to, I don't know what is. And though my opinion may make me unpopular, I think that "Prodigy" not only avoids middle book syndrome altogether, it's actually better than "Legend."

Loads better.

All of the things I loved most about book one were completely amped up in book two. The action was bigger and crazier. I had to actively force myself not to race through certain scenes or chapters, because I wanted to know the details as much as I wanted to know the outcomes. There were a whole bunch of plot twists, ranging from the 'wow-that's-so-depressing-I-never-knew' to 'oh-my-God-why' mingled with explanations of shock.

Not to mention the chemistry between Day and June. Anyone else thinking of a certain scene early in the story? I know I am. :)

In all seriousness though, the strengths of "Prodigy" as a story all tie back to the changing relationship and interactions between the two leads. Their relationship had so much more conflict this time around, and even physical separation doesn't lessen the tension between them. Awesome climactic scene aside, I was dying to reach the ending just to find out what would happen to them.

If you loved "Legend," you'll love "Prodigy." And if you were a bit more lukewarm, definitely give it a shot.

Just be prepared to gnash your teeth and wait on pins and needles for the next--and final--book!

Wow! This was a wonderful sequel to legend. I usually know where a story was going, but Lu had me guessing throughout. Great read!

4.5 stars
WTH WAS THAT ENDING I WANNA CRY BUT I'M ANGRY CUZ DAY HDHSBNSKSDMD
STOP WITH THIS PAIN ALREADYYY

i have a problem. i do this thing where i read an entire series without a break and procrastinate the reviews because i'm too impatient to get to the next book that when i'm completely done with the series, i forget the individual plot of all the books and all my tangled feelings that i experienced while reading.
i'm so sorry but i'll try doing justice to this amazing book right here I PROMISE

"All it takes is one generation to brainwash a population and convince them that reality doesn’t exist."
SO, i did a quick skim read through the book and the pain came rushing back to me. The first thing you need to know is, your stomach will be knotted the entire time and you'll be screaming for dear God for things to stop getting worse... AND WORSE

I LOVE the background of this book, i love its plot and everything just fits together perfectLYY, the only thing is- i was sick of the halfway love triangle and it made me want to cry out of frustration.
June and Day can literally stomp all over my face and i wouldn't even kill them.
they're
1. adorable
2. amazing
3. literally incomparable to any other book ship
4. my darlings
5. adorable

Now i'm just gonna talk about the most annoying bitches of all time some side characters that didn't please me as much as they should've!!
tess
why does she EXIST?! like i know day loves you but can you like shut up and be satisfied with what you have and CAN GET... do you have issues, like FOR REAL IF YOU CARE ABOUT DAY STOP BEING SO USELESS AND JEALOUS omg i hate the jealous sidekick trope so much it makes my head ache. I CANNOT STAND her idiotic presence in the book. she's just put there to ANNOY the hell out of me.
ok, she made her decision to stay with the Patriots, she's COOL AND MATURED now and has a new life. (we're good until here) BUT THENNNN she expects day to be all hers as if he's like A PLOT OF LAND OR SOME SHIT and hates June automatically because she was raised rich and will BEGUILE him into becoming a monster somehow using her evil witchy powers of existence- like apart fom the fact that you are a complete idiot, day is his own person you cannot just think of him as a five year old who'll fall for anyone's kind words and charm!! she does not know what they've been through together, and while concern is alright- straight up rejection and disapproval is just stupid because WHO CARES ABOUT YOU LADY??
it is obvious. goddamn crystal clear that dayy thinks of her as a sister and it is impossible for it to be otherwise because LET'S JUST FACE REALITY FOR A MINUTE!!!! i was so so so sick of her especially when she openly regarded june as an untrustworthy and unreliable traitor and messed with day's head by guilt tripping him through every single choice HE MADE when all he did was what was possible and RIGHT. as if he had SOO many choices and Tess could even live through making one without a pillar of support- ALSO I LOVE DAY FOR BELIEVING IN JUNE OMGOMGOMGG ELITEE

anden
yea anden, i get it. you fancy june and are ✨different✨ from everybody else and ✨kindd✨
that's all, FULLSTOP. STOP THERE PLEASE because you have a country to run, which to be fair and i admit he doesn't get too sidetracked from doing but still he's just one of those characters you hate for no reason. i didn't even hate him he just felt, extraneous and hugely unimportant to me- personally of course. and as an elector, he trusts WAY TOO EASILY
AND YES I KNOW IT'S A YA BOOK but why do all the twenty-year-olds have to be running a country like omg you're not even a proper adult yet!

now, for the obvious part of this review-
this book, and i promise you this, keeps you on the edge of your seat... the moment you think they've gotten it all figured out IT JUST GETS WORSE AND MORE PAINFUL
don't say i didn't warn you
unfortunately somehow, i'm exactly the kind of sucker marie lu has written these books for cause I KEPT FALLING FOR IT. like, finally no more pain but then the next chapter is like

I HAVE OTHER PLANS

also, i'm pretty sure i've mentioned this in my review of the previous book but I LOVE DAY'S TRANSPARENCY and i love his comfort regarding emotions cuz we get to know the real day, he's always the same day and we know him and we love him. for the first time an emotional character hasn't felt annoying to me and yes, HOW IS IT EVEN POSSIBLE but it is, and there is this level of familiarity even with a person who doesn't exist- YEA I KNOW- i know
*chokes on a sob*
why can't he just exist-
the whole time i was like

but june omg, her character development is literally first class- when you thought she couldn't get any cooler lmao... anyway, you see a kind of modified version of june in this book- and she's clearly the one with more restraint to the feeling side which i APPRECIATE and I LOVE HER, especially when you can see the strength she possesses instead of just hearing about it a lot yk (shade to celaena sardothein- YES I'LL NEVER GIVE IT UP)
also, ya romances are so genuine, and people just love each other so much no matter WHAT HAPPENS that it's kinda hard to believe most of the time. nevertheless, that is ALSO one of the reasons people read FICTION
my point is, i'd love to have what day and june have someday
the trust and confidence is on another level

overall, i'd just like to stress that i incredibly enjoyed the series, didn't get bored, and absolutely LOVED the characters. it is also fast paced, much like its prequel and i'm prety sure that if you enjoy typical ya books tropes and dystopian fantasy- you should definitely give it a go :)

Enjoyable

Enjoyed it. Will read the next one.
