So fun!! I honestly didn't pay much attention to things, apart from how fun it was. Really a book to just enjoy, not to be reviewed (by me, at least :))

Pros:
• The atmosphere was so so cool. It was like dark and gloomy. Brilliant.
• I actually kind of like the whole politics part of it where the median get involved because I think it makes things less boring.
• Their magick system is different from ones I’ve read before.
Cons:
• Briony. I hope she dies first ngl. She is so full of herself that at the end of the book when she convinces everyone that she wants to do the right thing to save everyone I don’t believe it. She has a hero-superiority complex. It’s frustrating as fudge.
• The action is bland. It’s exciting when it happens but it barely happens. The best part was when Allistair( is that how is name is spelled?) curses them to feel their fear. Loved it. We need more action like that. Instead it just felt like they were bullies in high school.
• THE ROMANCE. I’m kinda pissed ngl.
• The pacing sucked. What is the author even going to write in the second book?? I felt like I’d she added another 5% the book could have finished well. AND WHY THE HELL was half the book spent outside the championship.
It was good and I will be reading the second book. Maybe.

This is likely the most realistic description of what would happen if high schoolers were forced to use dark magic to kill each other. The first half was slightly sluggish; the characters were vapid, but that’s the high school experience. The ending was well written and I’d argue worth the buildup. The characters were overly melodramatic which made everything more fun to mock.

I read someone else’s review saying it’s “the hunger games with magic” and I was so excited to read this book, but sadly it was only okay for me. The character and plot development took so long that I had a hard time getting into it and wasn’t excited about picking it up to read until the story got going more than halfway through the book. Once I got into it I was so shocked and annoyed as to how it ended that the only thing I can think is that after they wrote the whole thing the publisher flipped to a random page and said “let’s end it here and make a second book out of it”. So, while I like it enough to need to know the ending and will read the next one, I don’t love how it’s written.
