Characters: 4/5- Three out of the main seven characters have chapters in the book, so I feel there are other voew points missing. However this does not in anyway take away from the characters that we get to know deeper. They are very well crafted and interesting.

Atmosphere: 5/5- You get the sense that from the first few chapters that their is a heaviness that surrounds the place and the people. It is always there throughout the whole book, even when your thoughts aren't focusing on it.

Writing: 4/5- Fast-paced, day-to-day venacular, most readers will be able to pick up the book and not have trouble with word pronunciation or definition.

Plot: 5/5- Seven children, one from each "great" family, are chosen to enter a tournament to the death to become the victor who will weild (along with their family) the rights to control High Magic.

Enjoyment: 5/5- Overall, the book was very enjoyable. Easy to read. Quick paced. Can't wait to get my hands on the second book.

This book was campy. It was so dramatic. It was bloody. And it was brutal. All things I truly adore in a book to be honest. I had a feeling this would be pretty intense reading and I was right. I sometimes can’t read books with too much gore, but I was so intruiged by the concept, the magic system, and the high stakes immediately presented that I couldn’t help but keep reading. This book certainly had some tropes, but executed in fun ways. And it also held a lot of surprises. Oh my gods the ending was…well it left me shaken with multiple twists. I need to go get the sequel. Overall, I really enjoyed this. It’s not exactly comforting but when you’re in the mood for dark fantasy this is a perfect book to try. And I definitely understand why I’d heard it suggested for six of crows fans because there’s so much delightful character tensions, shifting alliances, and questionable morals. Anyway like I said I can’t wait to read the sequel. I definitely hope we get to delve deeper into each character’s psyches and maybe get some more flashbacks?? I really liked the one about Isobel and Briony in this first book. Okay seriously I’m done, bye!

There are some things I'd like more explained and contextualized in the world building. I had no idea when this was even taking place.. the author made it seem like it was modern day, but there was no modern technology mentioned aside from cars and digital cameras. While that's not the most important thing in regards to the story, I was trying to orient myself in the world and honestly couldn't.

It feels a lot like Hunger Games, but with cool magic. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but I'd like more of an in depth look at how their magic functions bcs I'm kinda in the dark about shit like that so I feel less invested in the spell building and casting. Like they're talking about being able to craft and cast high level spells but there's no indication as to what that takes. Practice? Finesse? One person mentioned "oh you need to switch the places of these on the crafting board, but that seems pretty basic stuff, but how would I know that without any context?

The things I mentioned above just bugged me throughout and kept pulling me out of the story. Still looking forward to book 2 even tho I saw the twist coming from a mile away.

I think this book was perfect, like a perfect mix of The Hunger Games and Harry Potter... and might I say this book is even better than BOTH? I just might! While I personally felt it was a little slow getting into it, I understand upon finishing it that that was to build up each characters background so we care about each of them during the tournament. The last 50 pages were real page turners and I'm just happy that the second book is out so I can immediately continue immersing myself in this gripping, bloody, murderous love story. With twists and turns in literally every other page, I'm hopeful I'll love the second book just as much!
