What a wacky bunch of medical journal entries. I was completely entertained, and memorized a few gruesome tales for the next time I can't extricate myself from conversation with a creep.
An eclectic collection, lightly organized, of unusual and disturbing medical stories and advice, mostly from the 19th century, presented in an oddly jocular tone with liberal use of quotations from the medical literature of the time. The resilience of the human body in the face of a vast array of improbable injuries and afflictions is extraordinary, as is its ability to withstand wrong-headed (but supremely confident) medical treatments.
A book to be dipped into when your stomach is not too unsettled.

What an incredible book, 4,25 stars!
This book is so fantastically weird, cruel, gross, wonderful and fascinating all at the same time. The title perfectly describes what this book is about: curiosities in the history of medicine. This book has stories about exploding teeth, cutting dicks in half, inhaling knives for fun, spontaneous combusting and miraculous healing from otherwise deadly wounds.
Working in the healthcare myself, I was absolutely amazed to read all these stories. Sometimes the medicine of a few hundred years ago seemed incredibly advanced; other times you're shocked at their practices. It's unbelievable what people do to their bodies, and also how amazing the human body's healing abilities are. This book was such a weird but fun read, I can't help but to praise it and recommend it to everyone.

Now, I gave the caveat that I did medical research before, so this kind of stuff is not too graphic for me, however, this book is fun, funny, and outrageous. It’s a blast.
