I really loved Beagin’s first book and figured this would be a similar read, but I felt this one was very sad. It’s funny and raunchy like Pretend I’m Dead, but with trauma and pain mixed in. I still enjoyed the book and finished it in a day, however I felt a sense of sorrow for the main character throughout the book. I picked this up hoping to get away from some of the heavy stuff I’ve been reading lately and found myself on an emotional roller coaster.

I really liked the first book but this one just lost steam - Mona’s character development from the first book went mostly out the window and I really did not care for the weird reconciliation with her neglectful mother. It didn’t ring true the way Beagin’s work usually does. This one also lacked a lot of the whimsy of the first book.

At first I wasn't sure where this book was going to take me. There were sprinklings of dark satire throughout which resonated with my sense of wit, but I didn't understand their purpose.
Then the storyline started morphing and I could feel something twisted between the lines.
After a segue into Mona's memories or feelings, I would be suddenly reminded that the book is in the third person, which jarred me because it feels so close to first.
As the people around Mona become more volatile, and more of her memories are revealed to the reader, the puzzle starts to fall in to place - and it becomes harder to put the book down at the end of a paragraph.
It would be interesting to know whether the setting feels true to life to those who have been or lived in Taos or LA. I suppose the avoidance of descriptive detail there is fairly intentional...
Overall, this book really surprised me and I was sad for it to end, even though I feel like someone has shaken the living daylights out of me.

So I did not realise this was a sequel. I believe it stands on its own, but you can tell that there must be a history with Mr Disgusting or her father that isn't touched upon here as much. Beagin switches between Mona's current relationships with the people whose houses she cleans and her turbulent childhood surrounded by people who harmed her. The narrative is jarringly dark in places, but is prevented from being too morose by the bluntness in which the transgressions are shared.

Probably more of a 3.5- lagged a bit more in the middle than its predecessor. It seemed to start going in nonsensical circles- and I like nonsensical, but I do want some kind of meaning or pattern. The ending brought it back around.

I honestly do not know what I was supposed to feel about this book. For writing she will get a good grade, but, yeah I do not know.

Everyone seemed to want to sleep with Mona, every man and woman she met.
Then she has flashbacks of her creepy pedo grandpa.

She cleans around with houses, befriends her employers, since everyone also wants to be her friend, and do her
