Lydia Lloyd has long been a favorite follow for me on bookstagram. When her first novel came out, I'll admit I was worried it might not live up to the hype I'd built up in my head. No worries there - it was an easy 5 stars for me. If you haven't read When the Duke Loved Me yet, run don't walk to pick it up.
When the Viscount Wanted Me quickly cemented itself as another favorite for me. The tropes all hit the spot - older brother's best friend, reformed rake MMC, age gap (10 years, she's 22). Trem and Henrietta, whose romance was teased in the first book of the series, get together relatively quickly (and in a way you don't often see in HR) but there's plenty of plot left - though it is relatively low stakes.
Pick this up if you're looking for:
- non-traditional regency heroine
- plenty of sex in your HR
- low stakes plot
- instalove (although the characters have known each other since they were children)
I think this would be fine as a standalone if you haven't read book one, but I think you'll appreciate it more if you read When the Duke Loved Me first (doesn't hurt that book one is even better than book two in my opinion).
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This next book in the rake chronicles series follows Trem and Henrietta (brothers best friends little sister trope) in which Trem is to save Henrietta reputation by overhearing her obsessive ex Hartley claims he’s bedded her outside of marriage. We quickly learn it’s not a claim at all but truth and Henrietta doesn’t want to marry Hartley out of obligation.
I really like Lydia’s writing style as she depicts scenes very well. I think this would’ve benefited more with more emotions coming from the main couple as it sometimes felt surface level, maybe showing a few past scenes of the couple growing up wouldve helped instead of telling them. I will admit I didn’t always care for Henrietta. I just wasn’t emotionally invested in the couple. I DO look forward to reading more in this series.

When the Viscount Wanted Me transports you to the elegant and scandal-prone world of Regency England. The narrative kicks off with Lord Hugh Aldershot, the Viscount of Tremberley, overhearing a scandalous claim from a drunken Earl of Hartley about having bedded Lady Henrietta Breminster, the sister of Tremberley's best friend. Incensed by the slander against Henrietta, Tremberley drags the unconscious earl to Breminster House to confront him, only to come face-to-face with a scantily clad Henrietta.
Lady Henrietta Breminster, caught off guard in her nightdress, panics at the sight of Tremberley with the unconscious earl. She has long harboured secret feelings for Tremberley and is mortified by the potential scandal. Henrietta must now rely on Tremberley to help her avert gossip and protect her reputation.
As Tremberley and Henrietta work together to manage the repercussions of the earl's indiscretions, they find themselves drawn into an unexpected and forbidden attraction. Their efforts to keep the jealous earl in check only bring them closer, stirring deep emotions and desires. However, Henrietta is resolute in her belief that marriage should be for love, not convenience or duty, leaving her torn between passion and principle.
**Review:**
"When the Viscount Wanted Me" is a delightful addition to the Regency romance genre, blending scandal, loyalty, and forbidden love into a compelling narrative. Lydia Lloyd masterfully crafts a story that is both engaging and emotionally resonant. The chemistry between Tremberley and Henrietta is palpable, and their interactions are filled with tension, passion, and wit.
The character development is particularly strong. Tremberley is portrayed as a man of honour, fiercely protective of those he cares about, while Henrietta is a determined and intelligent heroine, struggling to navigate her feelings and societal expectations. Their journey from mutual respect to deep affection is both believable and heartwarming.
Lloyd's attention to historical detail adds depth to the setting, immersing readers in the intricacies of Regency society. The secondary characters, including the jealous earl and Henrietta's supportive brother, add richness to the plot and provide additional layers of intrigue and conflict.
The novel's pacing is well-balanced, with moments of intense emotion interspersed with lighter, humorous scenes. The dialogue is sharp and engaging, capturing the formal yet flirtatious nature of the period.
Tropes
-Marriage of Convenience
-Forbidden Love
-Protective Hero
-Strong Heroine
-Friends to Lovers

I really liked!! A unique, rakish in her own right FMC, lovely side characters. It was very clear to be that Lydia Lloyd is an expert in this time period. I loved the historical nuggets, particularly the salon for wealthy black people operating within or just outside of high society. Looking forward to continuing the series when the next book comes out!

I honestly loved this. I heard about it from the Fated Mates podcast and knew this was going to be for me, and it absolutely was. I can’t read too much romance close together or they all just blend together in my head, so I kind of set this up for that situation by insisting on reading the first in the series first, but I still really enjoyed this. The sex scenes were sexy indeed, and they were just so into each other! I appreciated that the tensions came primarily from outside factors and not from the protagonists themselves, but I have to say, I missed some of the pining that I expected in a best friend’s little sister romance. I do love a pining hero.

‘When the Viscount Wanted Me’ wasn’t a bad book. It just wasn’t the book for me. The beginning was fantastic. Trem overhears a drunken lord sobbing about the woman he loves refusing to marry him. He proceeds to claim that he and the woman in question have been intimate and all but calls her out by name. Realizing the men are talking about his friend’s sister, he decides to take matters into his own hands. When he confronts Henrietta, she tells him that what he overheard is right then they suddenly form this intense attraction, and the rest of the book is just them having sex. I’m 110% down for a steamy romance, but I want emotions and angst, and I can’t live without you moments, too.
The author's profile says she has a Ph.D. in 19th-century British Literature, so I’m sure everything was well-researched, but there was just something about the writing that felt at odds with the period.

Lady Henrietta Breminster thought that experimenting with her friend the Earl of Hartley was just two friends with no commitment, but Hartley has decided that it means she's going to marry him. Lord Hugh Aldershot, the Viscount of Tremberley, overhears a drunken Hartley spreading what he thinks are rumors about his best friend's little sister and decides it's his duty to quiet them. Only Hartley isn't lying and now Trem is seeing Henrietta in a light he never thought possible. Thus begins an affair that quickly leads to an engagement and the need to get Hartley to accept that he's not marrying Henrietta.
I'm amazed smoke didn't come out of my e-reader with this one. It is an extra level of spicy I was not expecting from a historical. I'm not complaining, I just feel like it's something that deserves its own shout-out. To say that Trem and Henrietta have chemistry is a major understatement.
Also of note is that Lloyd wrote a very character-driven story that gives everyone ample motivation and growth. Every action even by side characters leads to something and helps move the story without ever feeling like it was just dropped there to move the story, if that makes sense. It was great to see the main couple interact with tons of different people and seeing how that affected their relationship and the steps they took moving forward.
It's a romantic, emotional, and, can't forget, spicy story that got me instantly caring about the characters and their situation. A very entertaining read that hit all the right spots.
Very happy thanks to NetGalley and Tule Publishing for the spicy romantic read!

When the Duke Wanted Me is the sequel to Lydia Lloyd’s debut which came out last year. I liked her debut very much, so I was excited to receive this one from Netgalley. I’ve been following Lydia on Instagram for quite some time, so I’ve been exposed to the type of things she likes for a long time. Because of that, I knew this book would be a good time.
This book follows Henrietta whom we first met in the first novel of this series, When the Duke Loved Me. Henrietta was my favorite character in the first novel so I couldn’t wait to experience her story in this novel. This novel takes place a few years after the first novel, so Henrietta is a few years older and dealing with suitors left and right.
We really jump into things fast with our hero, Trem. There is a lot of sex in this book, and I mean a lot. I usually like more of a slow burn and angst aspect to my romances, but I actually enjoyed the sexy aspect of this book. I loved Henrietta and Trem together. We also met Trem in the first book of the series, but we met him as John’s best friend. John is Henrietta’s brother, so we have a brother's best friend/best friend’s little sister trope going on here.
Overall, I really loved the book. The only thing I didn’t enjoy was how wishy-washy John was as a character. He was overjoyed and happy when he found out about his best friend and little sister, but he was very quick to turn his back on Trem when a small issue occurred involving Henrietta. I didn’t like how John was so hateful to someone he called a friend after being so supportive in the beginning. I loved everything about the book, but John’s actions altered the 5-star rating I had planned on giving When the Duke Wanted Me. I
Tropes include: brother’s best friend, secretly dating, mutual pining
Thank you to NetGalley and the author for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
