While I did enjoy myself while reading this, it quickly became repetitive. After a couple hundred pages the endless psychological breakdown of the book's antihero, Raskolnikov, becomes boring. The book's ending, additionally, felt anticlimactic and ultimately seemed to convey a peculiar message to the reader, which I didn't take very well to.

I know this is a classic and hailed as a great literary achievement… but I just wasn’t feeling it.

Raskolnikov murders two women, hailing himself a hero. He believes the world will be a better place, even though things hadn't gone according to plan. As time goes on, deep-seated guilt slowly takes him over, especially as suspicion arises.

For a book nearly 700 pages long, there isn't a lot of action or much of anything interesting in general. Maybe it was profound for its time, but I found it painfully boring compared to other books with similar themes. Part one was promising enough but then the rest of the book droned on. It just wasn't for me.

I've already read the large majority of the rest of Dostoevsky's works and already knew that I don't like his writing and narrative style. I pushed through Crime and Punishment for it's place in literary canon, and that was a mistake. I absolutely despise this man's writing. I won't rate the book, because I don't think it's overtly bad literature and it doesn't deserve my horrible rating. Dostoevsky's writing and my taste just seem to be mutually exclusive.

A brilliant psychological study of mental illness and crime.
