Really enjoyable read. I think it definitely helps to have some knowledge of ancient Greek but the author's enthusiasm really shows and it's actually quite inspiring! There are a few sleeping/grammar mistakes (I assume from the translation process) but nothing that affects the reading experience I would say

Fin dalle prime pagine ha serpeggiato in me l'irritazione.
Non sono "9 ragioni per amare il greco" ma "9 ragioni per cui io autrice, che ho studiato greco, sono molto figa" (e tra l'altro ne conto 7, stando ai capitoletti..neanche la numerazione è chiara).
Sono irritata perchè non è una dichiarazione d'amore per il greco e un tentativo di affascinare anche chi, purtroppo, non ha potuto incontrare LA lingua per eccellenza, bensì un mero pretesto per parlare di sè.
Non è vero che si rivolge a tutti, anche a chi non ha mai studiato greco.
In primis, troppe parole non traslitterate e persino la presunzione di poter scrivere un paradigma, e invitare ad osservarlo per rendersi conto che ogni forma non c'entra nulla con le altre perchè " Non serve saper leggere il greco. Ponete pure che sia giapponese". Sarà un genio la Marcolongo con le lingue, ma io non distinguo un ideogramma cinese da uno giapponese, figuriamoci notare se sono diversi tra loro.
Sugli argomenti, poi, puntiamo direttamente alla rassegnazione. I concetti di radice e tema, di valore aspettuale del verbo, per non parlare del legame tra greco e protogreco/indoeuropeo sono ostici e creano non poche difficoltà anche a studenti avanzati del liceo classico. Sfido chiunque non abbia mai fatto greco (e magari nemmeno latino) a capirci qualcosa, data la trattazione assolutamente asistematica.
Infine, lo stile: la Marcolongo scrive bene, in modo scorrevole, questo è innegabile. Ma lo sforzo per apparire a tutti i costi simpatica e strizzare l'occhio al lettore è insopportabile. Non che parlando di greco e classicità si debba essere estremamente seri ed impostati, anzi, ben venga la battuta e la spiritosaggine: il punto è che per tutto il libro ho avvertito un umorismo "forzato", non naturale.
Un'operazione davvero furba, per non dire paracula, che di certo fa vendere molto ma non rende giustizia alla bellezza del mondo greco, ai motivi per cui l'abbiamo fortemente odiato e quindi fortemente amato.

I requested this book as I'm interested in Greek language and culture. Based on the book description, I figured it was going to be a look at some interesting ways the language has shaped culture through the ages, and I was sold by the disclaimer that said "no knowledge of Greek is required." I have to warn any prospective readers of this book that I found that to be a bit misleading, as the Greek language figures prominently and often in the text. The author does well to show why she's so passionate about the language, and many of the anecdotes are interesting. This would be a lovely addition to any student studying Ancient Greek in school, but for the layperson with very little exposure to the language, I found it to be a miss.

Bellissimo, semplice e divertente, mi ha fatto innamorare nuovamente di questa lingua meravigliosa e mi ha reso orgogliosa di studiarla.

Очень хорошо и понятно написанная книга (хотя, думаю, людям без лингвистического бэкграунда некоторые моменты могут быть непонятны). Чувствуется, что автор действительно живет этим языком и чувствует его. Интересно было читать культурологические сноски. Для меня эта книга послужила хорошим введением в древнегреческий, дала общую информацию об его характеристиках и в целом дала понять, чего ожидать от его изучения. Чувствуется, что эта книга - настоящий "труд любви".
Единственное, что мне не понравилось, - это излишняя, как по мне, пафосность которая мелькает в тексте. Однако она не мешает чтению.

Really enjoyed aspects of this book and it really buttressed the idea that learning another language is like a low grade psychedelic, but it felt like you could see the tool marks of translation from Italian. Rewarding but a little laborious in English
