This gave me all the dokidokis. I loved everything about it! (except the bonus manga with the teacher/student romance, NO.)

30 June 2023: ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Ha, I was really in the mood for this last year, huh? I didn't like it as much this time around, it's just not very special or memorable in comparison to all the other shojo manga I've read.

One thing I have to mention is I really like the trans representation in the form of the Sagara character - quite honestly, I think this is the first time I've read a shojo/shonen manga with a trans person who's not a comic relief character nor the butt of any jokes nor flamboyantly queer. (I'm sure they'll find some way to muck this up in future volumes, but I haven't read those. By not reading further I'm keeping this memory. :) )

It's kind of annoying that half the volume consists of bonus material. And no, I still don't like the ~forbidden love~ story between the teacher and student in the "Real Storm" bonus manga. Even though he's respectful about it, he's still in a position of power, and at an all-girls school, too. Take it out of my sight.

(I guess ~forbidden love~ and ~power discrepancies~ are themes dear to Matsuri Hino's heart, because the romance in the main story is also kinda "eh", if you think about it. Even if Suzuka doesn't want to order Megumi around, she's still in a position of power over him, and the romance stems from the idea that she's "sooo kind" that she wants to break the curse. In Vampire Knight, there was also a forbidden love, of the sibling variety. I... shouldn't read anymore of Matsuri Hino's work.)

Diverse cast of characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: No

This was the worst book I’ve ever read, not only does it contain a disgusting glorified impression towards a 17 year old and a 20 year old (ages shown in the second volume) in an unhealthy relationship, but a school girl and her teacher in the book aswell (the school girl x teacher and 20 year old x 17 year old relationships being separate) . The pacing with Megumi the main character at the beginning and his love interest (Suzuka) has no actual story and was just basically more of an introduction of the book. The two characters go in circles  and in one scene Suzuka attempts jumping off a building after a heart felt talk with Megumi’s close friend since Megumi had a “manservant fit” and keep in mind the book explicitly says Megumi would have acted like this towards Suzuka with or without the curse, which only proved how toxic the relationship is. I’m happy Matsuri Hino gave her characters SOME diversity with the characters by making one of them transgender and I’m not very educated with the writer. I’ve noticed that after a heartfelt scene with two characters in the book the scene after a few pages basically becomes completely irrelevant and had no actual impact. There’s no actual character redemption or development just unhealthy relationships in a book that is aimed towards TEENAGERS. The book is messed up in so many ways and the writing is terrible. I will say the illustrations are beyond outstanding but a book’s purpose is the story not the pictures (and obviously this doesn’t excuse the writing) . I’ve had to put the book down multiple times just to think about how either messed up or bad the writing is. I highly recommend you do NOT buy this book. I remember seeing this book in my (high school) school library and I saw my friend reading it. Megumi begins stalking Suzuka and Suzuka cries. The schoolgirl and teacher story is even worse, they demonstrate heartbreak in such a horrific way. Your love interest isn’t magically going to fall in love with you. That isn’t the worst part. It demonstrates basic grooming. Overall terrible writing and disgusting unhealthy relationships being glorified.

It’s a silly manga, enjoy it as such, as per the author’s intent. The last volume’s plot and wrap-up seemed super rushed though

1.5 stars?
This had potential to start with as a ridiculous kind of shojo manga. The manservent moments were over the top but at least amusing. It seemed like an old school style romance manga and that was okay. I liked the artwork. But there are no real transitions in the book and there are extremely repetitive parts. The worst though is that a little over half way there is just this random other story about a student in love with her teacher and its creepy if anything. It ends with another short story set in the snow. I just don't get these other stories and would have been more interested if it had stayed with the ridiculous servant story I was expecting.

(This review is for the entire series)

Captured Hearts is a pretty run of the mill shojo series that stands out from the rest via giving most of the page time to the male character.
It has a bit of a personality problem, as if the artist (Matsuri Hino) couldn’t decide exactly what type of story she wanted to create. There are chapters where it’s straight up rom-com before veering into serious drama while taking a turn through comedy and fantasy.
It’s not ground breaking or one of a kind, but it lends itself for a good read to pass the time.

This was pretty funny, and I enjoyed all of the ridiculousness. However, for some reason there were also two other completely unrelated stories after the main one in this manga. I may or may not continue the story. It was very funny, but I'm not too interested in the overarching storyline. 3.5 stars.

For some reason the manga randomly changed into a different story without any transition (with a disgusting high school teacher x student romance might I add). And then changed into another one? And then the manga was over? The main story of Captive Hearts itself was pretty embarrassing to read. Unless they figure out a way to break the curse (which probably won’t happen for a hundred more volumes), I can’t support their romance.

A cute concept for a short story, but I can't see it running more than a few chapters.
