I Can't Sleep

Honestly I read this fairly quickly but it ended up quite disappointing. The story felt repetitive and unrealistic. The ending left me rolling my eyes, it just didn’t make much sense. The writing itself had its strong moments and there were quite a few quotes I liked, but as a whole I was let down

This book had great promise, and I was super keen to read it but I feel at some points it did let me down a little bit.

The book is based on Becky a journalism student who experienced a traumatic event in her life that turned her into an insomniac, who throughout the book becomes increasingly more paranoid and jumpy.

From the get go I was intrigued by this book, but I do feel a lot of that came down to us not knowing what said trigger event was and obviously wanting to know... That being said, as the book built up we were able to piece together elements of said event.

As the book was written entirely from Becky's POV I felt we didn't get to see much of the other characters, which was a good thing as it made us super aware of how little Becky observed and how her life had been overtaken by her insomnia.

The writing itself was good but I do feel the author tried a bit too hard to build suspense into every sentence. The chapters were the perfect length though and helped me devour this book in a day!

The ending was what put this book so high in my rating, I had goosebumps when I was reading it and now I have no idea what to trust or who to believe when I think back on everything I read during it...

I wouldn't say this is the best thriller I've read but it definitely pulled me and made me question everything I had read previously.

At a first impression, this book really appealed to me as I love psychological thrillers. However, I found the main protagonist difficult to relate to. She has obviously got severe psychological issues triggered by events in her past, which are exacerbated by insomnia, and I found it difficult to like her, although not because of her issues. This may be due to the 30 year age difference; normally the characters in the books I read are more my own age.

The storyline was gripping, and I had just started to really get into it, when I realised I was almost at the end of the book! The ending was quite abrupt, and left me with more questions than it answered. It almost felt as though the author had had enough, and couldn’t be bothered coming up with a proper conclusion, so she left her readers to make their own minds up. Sometimes this can work in books, but not so much in this case.

Overall I enjoyed it, but for me it would have been so much better if the ending had been expanded, and proper conclusions drawn. I’ll still look out for more books by this author!

3.5 stars

This was a quick read, finished it in one day. Once again I am left torn. The story was good. It was quite a slow start, the author feeding us information little by little.

The big twist in the end? It was ok. I should have seen it coming, but I did not.

I don’t want to say I was disappointed by the backstory with Jordan. Tragic? Yes. But I expected something else. Maybe something bigger? Yes, the death of her brother is a tragic event and I understand her feeling guilty. Still I imagined a hundred different scenarios.

All in all, I actually liked the way it ended. I liked that there was not the usual Happy Ending. It also turned out that Callie was not as sweet as Becky wanted her to be.

My negative? They could have left out the bit with the cat. That’s my trigger, my pet peeve. I can’t stand animal cruelty in books…. Go and edit that away, will you? That always gets me and even ruins a book for me. Meh.

Haunted by what happened in the past and suffering from insomnia, Becky moves to a new place, with hopes to graduate and start over anew. But soon strange things start happening, there are shadows lurking inside her room, and outside her window, someone keeps calling her name but don't show their face. Is her mind playing tricks on her? Has someone followed her from the past? Or is it something more sinister?

Absolutely gripping from get go, a quick, and fast paced thrilling ride. It's the kind of a book that you finish in one sitting and then gape at the wall once you've finished it. It's exceptionally written and has a spooky feel to it. This'll legit put you on the edge of your seat and will have you guessing throughout. And the ending will make you think, rethink, and overthink, just what you read. I kinda like such stories where the ending is left to the reader to take whereever they want, but I desperately wanted to discuss this ending with someone to make sense of it all, I guess I'll just wait

I received a free copy of this audiobook from the author via StoryOrigin (thank you) and am voluntarily writing an honest and unbiased review.

Firstly, I have to say that first person "psychological thrillers" are not usually near the top of my preferred genres. So many titles say things like "If you liked Gone Girl" (I didn't), "you'll love this" which I often don't. Something about this one sounded like it might be more to my taste and the reviews were mostly positive so I gave it a go and I'm glad I did.

Is it "A Gripping Thriller"? Yes. Will it "Keep You Awake at Night"? Um, no, not in the slightest.

The story has a good pace and the main character is believable. Bits of the past are revealed slowly as the tale progresses and it's a little creepy in places while also being ambiguous about whether strange occurances are really happening or all in her mind. The ending was not what I expected and was a bit shocking.

The narration was excellent. The last few british books of this type that I've listened too have all been read with a very "posh" upperclass british accent which doesn't really appeal to everyone, me included. By contrast Kate Parry reads this with very appropriate down-to-earth regional accents which match the tone and writing style of the book perfectly.

I enjoyed this and would recommend it.

Good. Really good psychological thriller.

This book had me absorbed. It kept me engaged 100% held my attention. It was fast paced and still had depth.
It tugged at my heartstrings and had me hoping, praying that Becky would get the break she so desperately needed.
It looked promising for a while...
And nearing the end I wasn't sure how it could possibly end. My gosh. I wasn't expecting the ending not quite like that anyway.

Another fab J.E book anyone who enjoys this genre should grab it upon release...

I loved this and ripped through it, easily reading it in two sittings, I just couldn’t put it down... I want to start by saying that I HIGHLY recommend this thrilling and fun read.

In regards to the ending, I’m a little conflicted as to how I feel about it. On one hand I enjoy the twistyness of it after reading the ending and then the epilogue, and having to decide which of two conclusions the answer to it all could be... but at the same time, that really annoys me. I would prefer a conclusive ending. Not only that, the ending was just, I don’t know, it fell a little flat, which is SUCH a shame because the entire rest of the book was excellent.
But here is my dilemma, you see, this read was EXCELLENT and I felt flutters of excitement and ‘wow, what!!??’ at the end, and I put the book down feeling thrilled, so that’s a pretty good ending isn’t it? This is why I’m conflicted about the ending.

This is a fun, absorbing and twisty read that is enjoyable and so absorbing that it is hard to put down.

I was lucky to get an advanced reader copy via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Becky can't sleep. She's being haunted by the ghosts of the past. She's a broken girl, doesn't matter how much she tries, she can't fit in.

After the tragic events Becky tries to start afresh. To fulfil her brother's dream she enrolls in University and starts journalism course and moves away from home to live on a campus.
The girl's lucky to have really cool house mates. They get on well. When her next door neighbour Cally finds out Becky suffers from insomnia she very understanding and offers her support.

The stress caused my the change of the environment makes Becky even more edgy, her sleeping problems get worse. She's constantly exhausted and starts doubting herself. She's being paranoid about someone constantly watching her. Feels threatened as she receive silent calls from the unknown caller.

She feels like someone is taunting her. The chain of unexplainable events makes her question herself even more. Everything that's happening around her seems unreal.

I read this book almost in one sitting. I loved that the story was narrated by the main character. We could take a deep look inside of her mind.
It was gripping read, a real page turner. I enjoyed every minute of it. It kept me guessing right till the end.

The only thing I can fault this book is a few unexplained things. I guess it will give me a sleepless night trying to figure out if I missed out on something.

Overall, I think it's worth reading. The lovers of psychological thrillers will definitely enjoy it.

My first psychological thriller and I enjoyed it. The story follows Becky who has been suffering with insomnia for 2 years. Things are happening and you aren’t sure whether something is really going on or whether it’s all in her head. It was a really easy read and then that ending! I’m still trying to work it out now
