I loved this book. It is such an unusual idea and she completely pulls it off.
slow-paced

Interesting premise... very thought provoking. Middle of the book was way to long for me, I just wished the story would end at one point instead of being drawn out. Not a happy story; truly a tradgety.

The story in itself is interesting, it was thought through and didn't have any noticeable plot holes. The foreshadowing was awesome and most things I didn't really see coming (or I did but not in the exact way they happened yknow). BUT.

The writing was terrible. It was like no editor ever went through it. So much irrelevant side tracking, the voices of both narrators were basically exactly the same so sometimes if I didn't pay enough attention I got lost and had to look back to see who's POV I was reading. There's a few pretty big emotional events happening in the story but they were all described so flat - Niffenegger tried to use descriptive words but in the process got so lost in trying to present it on a nice platter that she forgot to season it, basically. That's about the best I can describe it without giving too much away. Plus half the time it was just a bunch of summing up difficult words to sound smart. It was very obviously her first novel, and not in a good way.
Furthermore I HATED!!!! Henry. He was a terrible person with terrible decisions and so stoic and egotistical. I could not deal. Of course the whole time traveling thing makes a mark on you, but he was so up himself about certain random things (like punk rock music!!! If you don't know about this or this band then you're a fake and terrible person. That's literally how he thinks). Gross. Clare was unrelatable to me too. She was so dependent. Gross again. Like you'd expect if you're married to a time traveler you'd learn to stand on your own two legs but apparently not. She couldn't even cook until she was 35 or so and with Henry for like 15 years. You'd think by then you'd know how to handle yourself when he's gone (of course you're allowed to worry but damn). Just a small example, there's more but I don't wanna spoiler. Both of them came from environments that were way up there (like really rich and posh) and just eh. I guess at least their families weren't perfect, that was a good thing.

Buuuuuut basically I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
