4.5 ⭐️

A truly emotionally devastating end to one of the greatest fantasy series.

Whilst Rin is at her most destructive in this book, I also believe she is at her most vulnerable, especially in how she views herself as a leader but also in her relationship with Kitay.

The stand out moments of this book involved the connections Rin had with the other characters, for me these were Kitay, Altan, Nezha and herself (honourable mention to Venka).

The moments between Rin, Nezha and Kitay, at times heralded back to their days at Sinegard, to then see them together as jaded warriors was heartbreaking.

The detail in the world building throughout the book (and series) was incredible and I think R F Kuang deserves praise for maintaining this throughout the trilogy.

Another highlight is R. F Kuang’s want to show the true destruction and realities  of war against the youthfulness and inexperience of her main character and how these interact with each other.

Rin to me will always remain one of the interesting antiheroine‘s I have read in fantasy.

It was hard to see the ending of this book as anything but inevitable, however R F Kuang’s writing amplified the emotional devastation tenfold.

This series to me has become a classic of the fantasy genre.

This book was a hell of an ending to a great series. R F Kuang writes excellently about the realities of war, the cycles that power and the abuse thereof follow. The lore and worldbuilding are rich and thorough, and her descriptions are straightforward but excellent.

That being said, I do have my issues with it.

• It didn't feel like it flowed very well. There is a lot of focus on travel, and not a lot happens during this time - we are told that Rin and the army are struggling through the terrains, but not a lot is shown.
• The Trifecta and Riga, in particular, have been shown up as the most powerful people in the land constantly for the last two books. Riga gets a few pages, and then suddenly the Trifecta doesn't exist anymore?

I did also get the ending spoiled for me - otherwise, I very much thought the ending was fitting and well executed (no pun intended, right?) - I do wish we spent more time with Rin's fall into madness towards the end, though I enjoyed what I read.

I'm off to read something hopefully a bit lighter, now!
