The MC is such a paranoid unlikeable idiot that I struggled to get through this book only because the worldbuilding was quite nice. The language was very simplistic as well, it's a translation into English but not executed by a translater trying to make the best of it. All in all sub-par and I am surprised this has grown so much and gotten so many sequels as the base quality is lacking. I am on the fence about trying to power through the second book, stupid MC's and inept writing are really normally a dealbreaker for me but the progession of the story does hold some promise.

It's okay. The writing style may turn you away. The translation is a bit odd at times. The voice acting was good.

The mc acts a bit weird sometimes. The game world seems okay, but the mc doesn't interact with it like a normal player so we don't get to experience too much of it. Things that aren't too well thought out can be ignored.

As character motivations go, this protagonist has a fairly unique one, at least in this genre.

He's here to save money for his daughter's surgery. And at first I thought that it'd be just a gimmick but this plot point was actually used really well. One example of what I loved is how he acts extremely miserly till he arranges money for her daughter. He doesn't even buy specs for himself irl. He is refraining from sending too much real money in game until he understands the need to spend.

I really liked this part of the character.

Being forced to play to gain money for daughters hearth operation, choosing a unkown race and advancing very fast through the system...
I liked the first part of the book where the MC works in the mines and levels up. At the middle of the book is a break and suddenly the mc has a whole new strategy to play the game. And to be honest the second part was not for my taste. The "strategy" seems not very "strategic" to me and is more based on pure luck and not knowing what else to do. Would have loved to seen more of the first part.

I've found a consistent feel in modern Russian (maybe?) authors. It's like a depressing weight of belief that nothing an ordinary person does matters. Money is the only power and justice is a myth that should be sloughed-off with childhood. It saps your soul after a while.

On top of that, the world-building in this book makes little sense. How the game economy works is a mystery that seems to result in armies of people being paid to mine virtual granite for a salary in the real world. Even if it did make sense, I don't think mining is a good base for an exciting story.

I also didn't like Oleg's approach to conflict. He rarely even protested as powerful people shit on him from their elevated positions. He just took it, and then buckled down to work. That comes too close to a victim-mentality for me to want to read much of his story.

Notes:

Yay for libraries!

Interesting progression but needs more setting developments. Episodic format or awkward timing on when to wrap up a book.

This was a very average Russian book. The writing isn’t the best and it’s convoluted but you always kind of want to keep reading.

Transported into a video game

I enjoyed how much it felt like I was inside of a video game right alongside. For those that have played and those that haven’t this is a fun ride from start to finish.
