3.5 + TW for rape (on page)
I was enjoying this, the first 75% atleast. Then all the drama kicked in, and I found both the hero and heroine kinda annoying.
But, I have complaints about the first 75% too, I'll start with that. First of all, I wrote in my notes that it was bordering on the insta love, it wasn't bordering because it definitely WAS insta love. Good thing it was done right. Secondly, For someone who was about to be a senior and an undercover cop, they sure doesn't act their age (e.g. the over done scenes in romcoms with the main characters playing with flour and batter and making a mess. This was published ages ago so I can let that go. Still cringe-worthy).
My biggest pet peeve was the hero calling the heroine woman, when asking her to sit or to tell him something or when he's asking her to make him pancakes. I get that he's saying it affectionately, I'm just glad we're over that time period. Also there's this:
I was kinda eeked out by this, this was the hero speaking about a woman, it's 2021 and this just don't sit right with moi.
Now, the dreadful 25%, everything was happening, the second act break-up and even third. The heroine started becoming stupid, but forgivable atleast, I think.
And then, something happens to her, not only that but the hero comes to ger rescue as a cop. After this big revelation she just doesn't know anything anymore.
God, I know Mase and Kash lied but Rachel could've atleast acknowledge that they saved her. Idk, she was so ungrateful after "the incident" I can't even. I mean, bitch can't even utter a simple, "I know you lied and I fucking hate you for that, but you saved my life and for that you deserve a simple THANK YOU". Also, the fact that she was just being overdramatic — enter miscommunication (not even) because she wouldn't let him explain.
Four months later, they reconcile and then the hero says this:
Um, excuse me. If she didn't know how to hold a grudge you would've reconciled as soon as everything went down. Not four months later.
Idk, it just seems counter active to me— some of the things that happened I mean. So this also touches on Candice's hero worship for her cousin. Also, the heroine saying Oh my word as her main expression, what are you 75!!! I have no idea if this is a Texas thing but all I can think about when she says this is Mary— Sheldon's mom from The Big Bang Theory uttering these same words with her southern twang.
This gets 3.5, I did enjoy it there was just a lot happening in 2013 in this book that I don't necessarily like IRL 2021.

I wondered just what kind of warrants that piece of trash had.

Ugh cliffhangers!! K got that out of my system, I loved this story so much! And Kash- sweet Jesus that boy and his lip ring and his sour patch kids and pancake addictions.... Swoon, just swoon! Can not wait for the next part of the story! The only side character I liked was Mason. Candice was kind of a hooker. Hoes before bros chicka. I couldn't stand the way she treated Rachel. Even if you don't want to believe something, your best friend deserves to have you on her side. No matter what. That's just my thought though:)
Best friend is a horrible friend, I can’t stand her. Besides her it was a good book.
Well, I had forgotten how great a writer Molly was. I won’t say this hit me as hard as some of her others, I mean I k ew exactly who Blake was from the very beginning unfortunately. I think it would have been a better read if it hadn’t been SOOO dramatic. I mean, say he’s a drug addict and that’s why his mood/behaviors kept changing. That could have easily made for just a good of story, maybe even better. But that’s just because I think it would have made it feel more real and less “story.”
I liked Kash. I wish he hadn’t been a singer. I mean, he’s hot, he’s not emotionally damaged, he’s educated with a good job. He doesn’t have some hidden past, and he’s respectable, why does he also have to have a swoon-worthy singing voice as well? Just unnecessary to the story. I did get annoyed with the immaturity in the relationship such as Kash getting so angry so fast when she thought he was behind some of the other stuff happening. And him thinking she was still seeing West when he came to the restaurant/bar, I mean that just was not true to the characters. It was just a few things like that where I just felt the story lost me.
I will say this is the first book I’ve read in awhile when I didn’t skim or skip through multiple pages just to get to the end. I did actually read this one and took it all in. I wish Kash would have fought harder for her in the end. Again, I just didn’t feel like it fit the characters. Oh, and I HATED Candice. Sorry, but no way would a best friend who’s parents took you in would NOT believe you. That is not a friend. He was her cousin, not her brother or something. Idk. I just don’t think any friend would treat someone like she treated Rachel after the rape. A friend may not want to believe it, but she would blame her friend and just refuse to believe it. I mean when did Rachel ever give her a reason to think she was a liar? WHY would she lie about it? I just really disliked Candice. Only reason I didn’t want Candice cut from Rachel’s life was because of her parents and how Rachel needed them.
The book really was a good read. Not the best book I’ve ever read, and I really did not like the epilogue at ALL. It sort of makes me not want to read the second book, but because I love Molly McAdams, I absolutely will read it.

I saw the Big Twist coming from a mile away, but the book was pretty decent. Not a fan of the epilogue, though.
