This is a slow paced book, but an excellent epic tale. I liken it to Robin Hobb's apprentice series a bit, but with less obvious humor.
I found it hard to track all the different characters and regions at first because the story was told from the end to the beginning rather than beginning to end. But in the end, I had the gist.
It starts out with the hero as a prisoner relaying his side of events to a scribe who is escorting him possibly to his death. From there you jump to his youth and of how he became a skilled fighter and ultimately a leader.
In relaying his account, the scribe begins to see that Vaelin Al Sorna is actually an honorable man following the actions given by his king as a pawn is moved by its master.
Lead by his Faith and his Blood Song, his religion and his power, Vaelin goes on many adventures and learns of other faiths and of others with powers like him.
This novel is truly an epic tale. It follows one man through many situations requiring his wit and kindness. You discover his depth of honor to his brothers of his order and to his blood family who he barely even knows.
This is on the scale of game of thrones. A great read and I'm looking forward to the next in the series.

Enjoyed this little diddy. Only issue was that almost everything V did was pointless in the end.

4.5 stars, can't wait to pick up the next one.
It reminds me, peripherally, of Mark Lawrence's King of Thorns.
