I had a hard time starting this book. As a person who isn’t super into comedy, it was a little too sarcastic and quip-y for me at first. But I’m really glad I persisted because I learned a lot and found Lindy West’s words helpful for articulating my own story. It was totally worth pushing through the constant bits, jokes, and snarky footnotes.

before buying this book, i read the reviews as the readers laughing hysterically and uncontrollably but it's not really my sense of humor. i chuckled here and there but it wasn't my cup of tea (especially the first chapter, which really threw me off the pace. although, it's a me-problem because i couldn't really understand the references). the structure also had me confused a lot. it's neither consecutive nor seamless to me-- it feels like a jumble of thoughts written down (which i guess would be fine to some, but i'm a bit nit-picky).
this book, however, is what i imagine whenever someone starts talking to me. it feels casual and lighthearted but then takes a turn to become a serious radical conversation. i love it!
there are chapters that are a bit harder to read than others but that's the reality of life and i love how lindy writes it as it is. and while we're on the subject, can i just say that while i've been reading a lot of radical feminist books lately, this one really hit the nail of how depressing and dark being a woman can be (despite the memoir being dubbed as lighthearted). so 4/5 !
