I’ve always wondered what happened to the main character in the book. Loved how they went back to them and it is nice to see a small window of the events after the end of the final book as well.

I didn't know I needed this novella but I'm so glad we got it. Not just because of who is in it, but also to give a sense of how life goes on after the final novel. I read it in Memory's Legion, I don't know if the final Author's note is in all editions, but I enjoyed that little note immensely too.

And in the end, I'm just sad there are no more new The Expanse books to read. I loved this series through and through.

Favorite quotes:
  • "I’ve known men like Jandro. He showed you what he was. He showed all of us what he was. And he got away with it. There’s no law with a man like that. The town voted, but he was more important. And you bent. You failed. You let him do what he wanted, and there was never going to be a path back for him. When someone like that wins? He’d never stop pushing."
  • "Thank you, but I don’t deserve any mercy." "Of course you don’t. That’s why they call it mercy. If you deserve it, they call it justice."
  • (These last two are from the author's note, not the story itself):
  • "Doing the right thing has to be enough in itself. It’s not about getting the pat on the head."
  • "One of the central arguments we’ve made with these stories is that, when you look at history, you see the same kind of people doing the same stupid, selfish, delusional, gorgeous, kind, astonishing things that we do today. And we’ll keep doing the same, as long as the species survives. Technical knowledge advances. The organism stays the same."

While this final short story in the Expanse universe is an interesting one that sheds some light on the fate of a character many would wonder what happened to, personally I felt that information was not an absolute need. I prefer how Naomi would see it, and this short story kind of changes that.
Still, an interesting one.
