Beautiful and moving - typical Kristin Hannah

I'm not sure what to say. This is my third Kristin Hannah novel, and each one takes me on a journey into the past or a remote land and it leaves me wanting to learn more. Her way with words is mesmerizing and beyond description. I reserve five stars only for the best of the best, and this was close. So very close.

Oh wow. I knew this book was going to be heavy and well-written and I was weary to read it. It was both of those things and I absolutely loved it. It was fascinating - I know embarrassingly little about the dust bowl and migration to California.

The book had a slow start but I was fully engrossed by the end. I knew it would end in heartbreak and dreaded it…. But the ending felt perfect, even so.

2 words that I would use to describe this book: perspective and gratitude

We all learned about the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl in school but this books gives such a personal and detailed and deep take that is so much different than simply hearing the facts. I have a new found appreciation for that peace of our history and such respect from the millions of people who lived through that time period. It’s hard to imagine the severity of the situation until it’s laid out for you in a way that digs into your heart.

My favorite part of this book was the character
