This was very much a follow up from The Tombs of Atuan. It isn’t as grand an adventure as Wizard or Farthest Shore, but focuses on one island and the story there. I feel like I was hoping for something more on a grand scale, so was disappointed not to see it in this one, when I had it in the previous book. I did enjoy having a continuation of Tenar’s story. However, I did not absolutely love this book From what I have read of the rest of the books in this world, this is helping set up for them. I am hoping I enjoy those a little more than I enjoyed this one.

The Earthsea series has been hit or miss for me—I didn’t really enjoy books 1 and 3, but loved 2, the Tombs of Atuan. This book was wonderful, and it might be that I just preferred her two books with female leads.
Centering the story on a woman who chose to live an ordinary life in a magical world was what drew me in, and then Tenar’s inner thoughts, choices, and determination made me love the book more. Through her characters, Le Guin explores sexism, power, and prejudice while highlighting the strength and magic her female characters have.

The story here did not grab me. The arcs that happen don't have a great foundation and feel like they just continually fall into the reader's lap. Oh, this character is here. Oh, this villain is here. Oh, the character has to leave. I know that's part of stories, but I just couldn't get into the setup that the author gave to us. The final chapters all kind of slammed into a weird climax, with no rising action.

I am out of my mind right now. like I say a lot I am incoherent but I am actually that now.
first of all, DRAGONS.
well not first of all but sure.
also women. I think that's it. a part of me is indignant at the suggestion of disqualification by birth. no kidding. but also she instead begs the question what else could be made. how else could it be ordered. my broken heart after the afterword of tomb is healed somewhat. because we see how she does go on and acts with agency. and who is more uncontrollable than a widow. I am so happy for this story. I was so happy for the oldness of ged and tenar. and therru. sweet! baby! angel!!! there was so much careful variation of women here.
a part of me always yearns for a man-woman character pairing to not end up together together. to actually just be friends. but this one ended up ok to me. im fine w it.i feel complicated about the "now you're a man" of it all??? but go off queen i know you got that good good
