What the fuck was this book? Was it good? No. Could I put it down? Also no. This is the second Colleen Hoover book I've read, and both I read in generally 1-2 sittings. Quick reads, compelling, you wanna know what happens next. Fluffy, simple, and you can skim and not miss any plot twists. But also they're the type of books you want to throw at the wall. And they are disturbing and fucked up and, like other have said, should come with content warnings. Probably won't read any further novels from this author.

Oh my fucking god! What a book! I was gripped from the first sentence. I wasn't expecting the smut but that added so much more enjoyment to this book.

You follow Lowen who's not a well known thriller/horror writer. In the beginning, she's heading to a meeting and accidentally bumps into the husband (Jeremy) of the writer (Verity) she'll be collaborating with. Lowen finds a manuscript that Verity wrote about her life but many months later finds a letter written to Jeremy from Verity. Which one do you believe is the truth?

I'm team manuscript however that may change when the second book comes out as it left on a cliffhanger.

The writing style seemed a bit juvenile to be the inner monologue of a published author in her early 30s. Otherwise, a really good read. I had guessed a significant portion of the plot early on but was still hooked all the way to the end.

First book of C. Hoover I read / listened to. The books sell so good in our store, so I thought I finally give it a try.

Well. I don't get it. Why is it this popular?
So much sexism, ableism, fat-phobia.
No content warnings at all.

SO GOOD. im not kidding when i tell you that i could not put this book down. wasn’t as scary as people said it was. please check tws before reading!!

verity being able to actually walk was not at all surprising to me. lowen in this story is crazy. with her bitting the exact same marks as verity did, putting the pillow below her hips (pg 268 if you’re confused), and EATING verity’s letter?? the letter at the end has me a bit confused on whether i’m team manuscript or team letter.

edit: after having some time to think about it, im team manuscript. here’s my reasons:

1) in verity’s letter, she said that she only told crew to hold his breathe once they were already in the water. it doesn’t make sense to me that her first instinct was to speak and not to attempt to float to the surface. also she never said that she told harper to hold her breathe so it’s a possibility that verity actually killed her.

2) no mother could ever write about them killing and abusing their children if they really loved them.

3) crew was still afraid of verity even after  her accident. if the manuscript was all fake and verity didn’t abuse her children, why would he be scared of his own mother?

4) how could crew “accidentally” cut himself on the chin? he could have been curious about it but also verity could have been the one trying to slit his throat before he started screaming. crew was never exposed to violence so i don’t think he was pretending to be a fictional killer or villain.
