"if sons and daughters are treated equally, raised and educated in the same manner, then the responsibilities assumed by men and women would surely become equal. when that happens, the nouns 'man' and 'woman' would no longer be necessary."

"as a woman, i have no country."

a five stars read. i didn't know anything about feminism in china, so this just hit me like anything. but this is such an important read. especially for anyone even mildly interested in "feminism". this is important. please read it.

also, the book mentioned about how "dangal" was such a big hit in china, bc the young feminists found inspiration and ability to relate with it. they felt like they shared the story of gender hypocrisy and opposing the gender roles that the athletes went through in india.

in such a depressing book, that section was so heartwarming to read. again, proving how important stories are - fictional or otherwise. an underdog story of a female wrestler in india became an inspiration for a feminist in china.
this is exactly why i love stories.

This is a DNF but not through fault of the book. It's constant trauma is not something I can take in at the moment, but it's very well written, researched, and important.

The Chinese government, on the eve of International Women’s Day in 2015, arrested five feminist activists who were then jailed for 37 days termed "The Feminist Five". The detainment of the Feminist Five drew the attention of the entire world including Hillary Clinton as well as the inundating social media with #FreetheFive messages from other activists. These five women are part of a much larger feminist movement in China. Leta Hong Fincher explores this popular movement and its threat to the China's authoritarian Regime through the events in the lives of The Feminist Five as well as other Chinese activists. How could a feminist movement reconfigure China and the world?

I listened to this as an audiobook and thought it was incredible. I didn't know anything about feminism in China and wanted to expand my knowledge of Feminism in the countries other than the UK and the USA. Leta Hong Fincher is an incredible author and delves into women's rights democracy, politics and the global resurgence of women's activism and particularly its impact on an authoritarian government system and how an idea even if there is no formal organisation in the sense of a government organisation can have massive impact and move an entire demographic to action. I can't wait to read her other book Leftover Women!

Starting off with the story of the Feminist Five's arrest on the eve of International Women's Day in 2015, Betraying Big Brother is a thorough and well-researched story written about the Feminist movement in one of the most controlled countries in the world. Leta Hong Fincher illustrates the resilience and challenges faced by some of the instrumental women fighting for equal treatment in China. Through their creativity, networks and diverse channels, their fight against the patriarchy could help change China and the world for the better.

How do you sustain a feminist movement in the face of systematic, sexist, authoritarian oppression and state-level fragile masculinity? A chilling reminder not to take our democratic freedoms for granted.

Revealing account of feminism and the struggles activists face in China.

It was interesting to read this while also watching the famous Chinese dating show If You Are the One. I couldn’t help but look out for signs of a feminist awakening from the contestants or messages about traditional family straight from the Party’s mouth.

This book certainty paints a different picture to the outwardly modern face the Communist Party presents.
