Opting for a focus on the the nature of mankind in tandem with an exploration of fantastic sciency, space elements over character development or progression, this book still kept me intrigued and entertained. Space is truly awesome, and the way Clarke captures the scale and sheer might of the cosmos was a blast

The advantage of the book over the movie is that we spend more time with the characters of the first and second part as well as the Third and Fourth part being more fulfilling in it's descriptions and explanations of why things happen the way they do. And while most of this book is a voyage with large swaths of nothing interesting occurring event wise, Arthur C. Clarke has such a beauty with words that he can make the descriptions and settings of the voyage interesting.
My problem is the whole story of the book, about our coming of age as a species and exploring further beyond that. I was not captured as I had no connection really to the characters of the first and second part. While I like the reasoning behind HAL's insanity being essentially lying about his true purpose; First acting to cover up the evidence and then in acts of self preservation. The idea that Earth would keep the true reason behind the expedition a secret boggles my mind. How was Earth able to convince two men that they needed to embark on a years long journey to Saturn when other planets had existed if not for ET activity?
The decision to also end on a cliffhanger for a planned one book/movie is boggling. While I know there are three other books that clear up questions in the story, that was never originally planned. No every story needs to have a clear understandable ending, but I believe the seeds should be in the story to be able to connect the dots. The books does achieve this to some extent with what sent the monoliths. Ending on a cosmic baby speed through space to reach and end up above Earth, sounds like a set up for a sequel, not an end to a Clarke and Kubrick collaboration masterpiece.

È in libro interessante, inizialmente presenta diverse storie separate che poi si uniscono nella parte finale.

I really enjoyed this book! I was surprised by how realistic the story seemed. I didn't entirely enjoy the style of writing- especially at the end of the story, but I can't say that it really detracted from the overall book. I will have to watch the movie and see how they compare.
