Different than, but in sync with, the Kubrick film.
My favorite part is where Heywood Floyd uses an iPad (seriously, Clarke gets everything right 40 years before Steve Jobs "invents" it.)

This is likely a good starter book for sci-fi. Unfortunately it hasn’t aged as well as others from its time. I had a little giggle when Clarke said the earth was going to run out of food because ~gasp~ there were six BILLION people on the planet!
Anyway, the pedal only hits the floor at the end. I felt like I was just coasting for most of the novel—just like the discovery, but that was going at speeds of km/s, not a few pages before predictable events ended another short chapter.
I am glad I knocked this off of the Sci-Fi canon list, but wouldn’t read it again. I’m not sure I’ll finish the series either.

A sci-fi epic for the ages. This should be a book you've read if you love the genre.
I had a really hard time finishing this book. And after I was finished, I had no idea what I had read.
Descriptive and thought-provoking, with no words minced. Most of the characters are stoic scientists who internalize their thoughts, which leads to some dry interactions. Still great though
