I’ve been meaning to read this book for a decade plus. The film gets is pokes from the younger generation for being slow and cheesy, but I think upon deeper investigation it truly is a masterpiece of not only sci-fi, but of creative vision in general. The book basically being written along side the movie, does not disappoint. It might even captures a bit more of the surreal in its pages. I’m really impressed how well it holds up after so many years and massive leaps in technology. I think our progress in AI and the idea of a simulation are the only things missing to their full effect in this book. It doesn’t suffer for it.
“The conflict between mind and machine, might be resolved at last in the eternal truce of complete symbiosis. But was even this, the end? A few mystically inclined biologist went still further, they speculated, taking their cues from the beliefs of many religions that mind would eventually free itself from matter. A robot body, like the flesh and blood one, would be no more than a stepping stone to something long ago men had called spirit. If there was anything beyond that, it’s name could only be God.”

Once again Arthur C. Clarke really does it for me! He is really able through simple prose to instill a sense of wonder and anticipation! Really love the film...now I really love the book too!
Will definitely be reading the others in the series!
UPDATE 2/16/23-
This may not have been the amazing re-read that I was hoping to have. I have been struggling to read a good book recently, the last 3 reads have been pretty big flops, so I thought, why not go back to a classic fave? This was slow, like glacially so, for most of the book, the only time this book picks up is in like the last 50 pages. I did not remember this, though maybe I should have as this is how the movie feels as well. The story, ideas, science, and philosophy are all excellent, which is why I will stick with my 4 star review from 2014, however the pacing was just not suited to a re-read. Maybe on the first read since you don't know what's going to happen the pacing feels more mysterious than slow, but coming back to the book was just more tedious than I was anticipating.

Absolutely mind blowing! Very much like the movie in a sense, its literally breathtaking and annoying in a good way! I just love this book and the movie!
And the special introduction by Mr. Clarke made me feel like I wanted to cry!

Inventive and interesting! There was some 1960s sci fi written by a man stuff (no female characters, the jump ships with feminine names because they were a little “unpredictable”) but genuinely cool ideas and neat worldbuilding.
2.5 rounding down. I really wanted to like this book more. However, it didn't work for me, lots of unnecessary deaths, random exposition, and a plot which doesn't really go anywhere while the main characters are paper cutouts with no real personality at all. The only slightly interesting plot-line about HAL is resolved pretty early and the rest of it is supremely forgettable.
Not sure I'll read the rest.
