This book OH MY GOODNESS. I was confused for a lot of it since it had to do with Asian history and I don’t know that really. But it was beautifully written in such a way that I felt I was really there! I adore Zhu and I want to read the second book

quite a fitting rating considering my lack of emotional involvement in the better half of the story. the rest of it was so gut-wrenchingly tragic and saddening i genuinely can’t bring myself to say i enjoyed it. alas.

This book is what The Poppy War wanted to be but failed at in my opinion. Great book all around!

I really liked this book. I picked it up on a whim without knowing much about it. It's kind of like Mulan meets The Poppy War. A lot of intrigue and political drama. I think I'd like to follow this series through.
