This is a book for youth! I emphasize that because the audio certain I listened to was not so marked. The strongest part of the book was the female protagonist. Everything else was so-so. The plot was entertaining but run if the mill and had a couple holes that didn't get explained. One character came out of nowhere to save the day on the 11ty hour, which felt awkward. Not a bad book overall but not a keeper.

My 22 month old pulled this off the shelf and I thought it looked good so I read it. I'm glad I did. I enjoyed the adventure and particularly the ending. Endings are important! It was a light read but intriguing.

This is one of the books that has been on my shelf since I've had a shelf.
A wonderfully descriptive and creative tale. Truly some of the best imagery I've read

Two things attracted me to this book when I saw it. Firstly the cover, it just looks so ghostly and chilling, I couldn't resist. Secondly, the idea of a bay drying up and an eighteenth century ship appearing adrift in the bay. What a fabulously original story line. I was completely intrigued by this book and couldn't wait to read it.

I actually took this one on holiday with me, as it appealed to my holiday mood - set in a seaside tourist area revolving around tales from the past.

I have to be honest and say their were some things that were too obvious in the plot line. The occasional event occurred that were just to easy to predict. Although on the whole I was urged on to read to find out the ending. In some scenes, I would have also liked more action, but that is just my personal preference.

I really liked Vicki and Peter, the two main characters within the book. Vicki seemed to get away with murder as her parents were so busy with their restaurant, so she seemed to have a lot more freedom of a twelve year old than I would have expected.

There are some dark and chilling scenes within the book which I really enjoyed. To me, this was a good old fashioned mystery story with a modern setting. Give me a mystery and a curse and I am a happy girl. If you liked the ' Secret Series' by Enid Blyton or you have read and enjoyed the more modern equivalent,' The Adventure Island' series by Helen Moss, then I think you might enjoy this one.

It is very rare to read a German author, in fact the only other German author I have read is Cornela Funke who also is published by Chicken House. I love that Chicken House embrace all nationalities providing us with a wider range of fiction.

Reading this book, it was difficult to imagine that the main characters were only 12 years old or so and that adults were fully helping these children without question,  or logic. The book wasn't bad but this was hard for me to look past. Also towards the end of the book when Vicki screams, (being vague as to not include spoilers) just seemed strange and as though more should have come from this moment. I feel like I might not have been the target age group and that may have lead to me not liking this book.

Ghost Ship by Dietlof Reiche is a young adult mystery with paranormal themes. Vikki plans to spend her summer waiting tables in her parents' restaurant, a must see stop in their seaside village. A summertime friendship with boy visiting the town with his parents and the mayor's renewed interest in the figurehead that sits in prominent display in the restaurant sparks a series of events that forces the village to relive the events that brought the figurehead to shore.

The book has some fantastic moments like the bay running dry and the appearance of the ghost ship. Unfortunately these dramatic moments are spread thin across an otherwise slowly paced novel. I realize a teen working in her parents' restaurant will be tied to her job but so much time is spent in the restaurant when the exciting and scary parts are happening outside.

I struggled to finish Ghost Ship. It lacks strong characterization, a well thought out timeline and dramatic pacing. Too much effort is spent describing the mundane and not enough on the extraordinary.

This is a translated children's work and honestly it was a pretty poor one. Not only did they change the German names, but completely moved the location from North Germany to America.

Read for Becca's 48hr BookopolAThon.

In the English version the pirates are cursed because they hanged Simple Simon not the fact that they "stole" slave from slavers and sold them to Americans?
