insufferable man but very entertaining (esp to read while working at hubspot lol)
Riveting easy read about an esteemed journalist working in the world of start-up dysfunction. This true tale reads like a good psychological thriller, with mental and emotional abuse in place of actual murder.
What a surprising epilogue.
As someone who works in Silicon Valley, I get a lot of the references in the book and share similar frustrations at certain situations. However, there is another side to the Silicon Valley that is not highlighted in the book. I'm not angry about that because the book is supposed to be a memoir and not investigative journalism but wanted to iterate that so that people who read this book don't think there is only one side - the ridiculous side mentioned in the book.
The book is a great read and its funny (because it's true). It also taught me a lot on diversity and ageism - both huge problems in Silicon Valley.

I really wanted to finish this book since I spent $4 on it when it was a Goodreads Deal of the Day but even $4 is too much to pay for this book. I read some pieces by Lyons in other publications that probably went into this book and they were fine, but put together in a book, the whole less than the sum of its parts.
On the surface, an ex-newsroom guy working at a startup sounded good to me, an ex-startup developer working in a newsroom. The subject matter wasn't really problematic. What was problematic was his dismissal of almost everyone who works in startups. Lyons comes off as really bitter about his firing from Newsweek and everything that comes after and I had a hard time feeling sympathetic to him. The last straw was when he complains about age discrimination in one sentence, then turns around and writes that he wishes this woman at work would die as a severely overweight, old, cat lady.

I don't typically read nonfiction, but I heard some hype around this book and wanted to see an outsider's perspective on the tech startup universe. It's nice to know that my company isn't the weirdest startup in Boston.
The writing was great, and the crazy stories about Hubspot were broken up with analytical perspectives on Silicon Valley and venture capitalism. While these asides were interesting, it's not really what I expected from the book. I came in hoping for funny stories, and came out feeling kind of uneasy about the bubble in which I live.
