Ugh, Zuckerberg is the worst. Really disappointed by all the things he seemed to let go on, despite knowing it was hurting other people. What a selfish jerk.

This is a moronic book written by someone who's woke and who obviously has a bias against technology / capitalism and it tries to paint Zuckerberg as an entitled idiot. Is he entitled? Sure. Is he an idiot? No.

Should they have listened to Stamos and done better? Surely. But should they also have Kaplan and the likes on the team? Absolutely. Should they have deleted misinformation? Absolutely not.

Were it not for my profession's requirement to stay aware of the comings and goings of business and and their advertisements on "Blue" the insiders name for the Facebook app, I would have run for the hills long ago.

But for all my disdain for Zuckerberg, his pompous self-delusion, and the destructive trends that have been only accelerated (or made possible) by Blue, nothing perpared me for this inside look at the machinations of one of humanity's most destructive creations.

From its willful participation in the fraying of democracy, to its willy-nilly approach to security, to its consistent efforts to protect ungodly profit margins instead of human beings, Zuckerberg and Sandberg are revealed to be the people we all feared they probably were.

Deluded by their own toxic positivity and need to be seen for their intentions rather than their actions, the Facebook leaders are revealed in this deep study of Facebook headquarters from 2016-2020. The quality of the journalism, the depth of the interviews sing, weaving a comic-tragic tale of how web 2.0 was mutilated by Facebook to become an engine that monetizes privacy, accelerates rage, and destroys the exact discourse it claims to exist to protect.

There will be books written in 100 years about the main actors that unraveled modern society. When the inner circle of culprits is revealed, Zuckerberg and Sandberg will be sitting among the pantheon.

As they say, all the devils are here.

An Ugly Truth is about Facebook's rise, its intersection with free speech, and its incorporation of other social networks including Instagram and WhatsApp. There are a couple of sections of the early Facebook days, as the creation of how to rate "hot girls" on Harvard's campus, though the majority of the book is focused on the Trump era when FB came under a lot of negative light.

I didn't love this. It wasn't particularly insightful and read like a summary of recent current events without much analysis. It would have been more helpful if the authors had broken down the journey into "eras" so the reader could more easily follow along, but the story seemed to scatter itself covering various congressional hearings, scandals, and public apologies.

The ultimate message seems to be that FB has snowballed into this ugly thing that has become larger than what it can handle when moderating explicit content and misinformation. Without putting privacy of the users ahead of profit, this system will likely continue to proliferate as FB looks to expand into currency and VR (as seen by the recent launch of Metaverse).

Well. This was certainly an interesting time to read this book.

Within the first 50 pages I had to put it down because I was so angry. An opening story was about a number of Facebook engineers who were (eventually) fired for using their access to stalk women they had met on dating apps. I’m glad I picked it back up, but it definitely wasn’t an upper.

I recognize the irony in posting about this on a Facebook owned app. But a truly worthwhile, yet infuriating read. What Zuckerberg has knowingly created, and been supported by so many powerful people, particularly Sandberg is deeply disturbing.

The Facebook files dropped & that interrupted my reading, then I was really too disgusted to want to read/listen to a deep dive on how Mark & this company are literal garbage…
