Apollo is an interesting main character, however the best part of the book was the Percy Jackson cameos! It seems like every series Riordan writes is kind of following the same formula, and while they're not wholly original I still enjoy the journey.

Edit: Just thought it might be safer to say here that there's TINY spoilers in the review. I try not to give out spoilers too often in reviews. I don't think they are anything too major.

I'm typing a quick review of this book on my phone because I really don't think I will be able to leave a review this week otherwise.

I checked out this book from the library via Overdrive. I don't really understand why I didn't like the first Percy Jackson book other than the fact that I don't get the hype. Besides Harry Potter, I tend to stay away from stuff that is really hyped up.

I don't know what made me just check out this book from Overdrive either. I wasn't going to even finish reading this book, I only planned on reading just a couple of paragraphs or a couple of chapters even.

But the moment Apollo went from Greek God to mortal my opinions changed. He even tried to relate to "us mortals" but failed and made his thoughts on being a mortal funny. THIS was what I had expected Percy Jackson to be like...

Despite not liking the first PJ book, I really appreciated his appearance as not being a 12 year old boy anymore. I went into this book not knowing what had happened between books one and Apollo one, and I wasn't too lost. I don't think it ruined all of the series for me either because it didn't give a ton of spoilers.

I just REALLY liked Apollo's voice. I honestly don't know what made the difference here between this and PJ. Maybe I will like the rest of the series now?

This book had some funny moments. (I now also have Sweet Caroline stuck in my head.)

I did not like the ants scene. Remember the giant spiders from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets? That was what that scene was like for me....(I hope this isn't a real spoiler.)

This was going to be a three star rating but since I grabbed the second book from the library already, I said to myself, "Oh, what the heck. You downloaded the next book, you can't stop thinking about Apollo. Give it a four star rating!"

So that explains how it went from a three star rating to a four star rating.

I was skeptical of this story being told from the perspective of a god, but Apollo gets much less annoying as the story goes on. Not the strongest Riordan book, though. The action didn't really pick up until the very end and then bam, book's over. I also didn't get as invested in the characters as I have in past books.

On a positive note, although Meg was pretty unlikable, the way Riordan describes her conflicted feelings about her abuser was haunting. It was very realistic and was one of the most memorable scenes for me. Also, gold star for including gay characters and not having that be the focus--they are just characters like everyone else!
