It was a very good book, however, the ending was very abrupt.

When I think of Nora Roberts, I think of nice, sweet stories. The ones I have picked up this month have been anything but. I suppose there were some nice and sweet parts to this book, but it began with something tragic and continued with a murder plot throughout. It reminded me of Jodi Picoult’s style at first.

I was completely captivated by the story the whole time I was reading it. It was a random purchase and one that’s been on my shelf for a while, and I’m glad I finally picked it up. I really liked to see the character growth throughout the story of the main characters, and even some of the less prominent side characters. If you would’ve told me that this book spanned a decade in years, I would’ve questioned how good it could possibly be. That being said, it was done really well, and despite the vast amount of time it covered, there was plenty of detail about each bit of time.

While reading, I simultaneously wanted this book to be over, because I wanted to know how it ended, and also never end because I enjoyed these characters so much!

As with the rest of her thriller romances, the villain in this book was truly horrifying and the writing was compelling. It was a tough book to get through when the United States is facing so much mass gun violence with no response from those holding political power, but Nora Roberts is a good writer and I was interested in the story and able to get through it. However, I do feel like the romance was lacking in this book. I enjoyed both characters, but I felt like I got much more time with the hero than the heroine and knew his perspective much more than hers, at least when we finally got through to their stories in the present timeline. I do love that HE was the one who had a "love at first sight" kind of connection with her rather than the other way around, and wasn't too afraid to be honest about it. But I felt there wasn't enough to then support the continuation of that love--Simone was pretty closed off, and we spent precious little time in her head in the second half of the book. Too much of it was told in narrative of time passing as opposed to more scenes actually together. I don't NOT believe that they are a good couple, but I wished the book had done more to SHOW me that they were a good couple and that they genuinely enjoyed each other. In this book, more than her other thriller romances, I feel like the development of the hero/heroine and their romance was overshadowed by too much page time for the villain. When I compare it to my favorites, The Search or The Obsession, it definitely feels lacking. Still, a book that kept me up past my bedtime and was compellingly written.

At first I wasn't sure if I would like this books since the first part of the book dwelled on what was happening during the Mall shooting. Then the story progressed it to the survivors lives after such a horrible event and it got more interesting. There are good and funny parts of the book, but most of it is very sobering about the mass murdering going on today and I think it would not be a good book for someone who experienced such trauma.
The part about Reed hooking up with the grandmother was maybe funny about two times, but I think it could have been removed after that.
Overall, it was a good book but somewhat sad as well.

Romance/Thriller but most of the book is a thriller. There is a shift in tone when the co-MC's meet each other. We know it's predestined half-way through the book. So there isn't any suspense whether the HEA will happen.

The mall shooting thriller through the years is solid, and the villain is pretty great. Reminds me of Villanelle is Killing Eve a bit. But that could be the fact I just finished season 1 talking....

Side note: NR writes very dynamic older women characters. Like Cece. It makes zero sense to me why she keeps writing 20 to 30 something leads. NR is 67 herself, and I would love to have her write an older age romance. Even romance/thriller which is her jam lately. Lately, her older female characters are the more interesting characters in her stories- write them stories, please!

I sometimes feel like marking a book as read when I listened to it on audibles is cheating, but the narrator so fully immersed me in this story that I'm counting it!! Such a well told story, and I'm unashamed to say that several tears were shed.
