So stylistically different from my latest Le Guin read (Always Coming Home) that it took me a second to get into it, but once I did I was enthralled. Creative and thought-provoking as only Le Guin can be.

Beautiful and strange, I've never read Ursula Le Guin and perhaps incorrectly assumed she was at her publishing peak in the 70's, so I was surprised by how modern some of this book was (relatively - it was still published 20 years ago).

A travel guide to unknown dimensional planes, Le Guin captures so much of what makes us human by imagining worlds and cultures and territories that are distinctly not human.

It's charming and beautiful while also terrifying and distressing as, the older I get, the more it seems that history really does repeat itself regardless of time, place, or culture and perhaps at a fast speed than ever before.

Recommend to fans of sci fi, travel stories, fairy tales, and imagined histories.

imaginative as always from le guin. i especially love when she talks about language and linguistics. this was an intriguing read, each chapter a different imagined plane of existence seen through the eyes of one narrator, so it reads like a travel journal. not really character-focused, however, so not super impactful for me. the repeated use of the r-slur was a bit of a jumpscare on audio though. published in 2003, but i still hate to hear it

It was an intriguing concept, but it has too many instances of rape and violence for me to keep going.

Such a good book! I didn’t know anything about it, so to find it was sci-fi was a nice surprise. I was expecting short stories about airports, but I got something even better. It’s not quite 5 stars because a couple of the stories were boring to me, but still a good read.

DID NOT FINISH
