Apple and Knife by Intan Paramaditha is a debut short story collection that is inspired by horror fiction, myths and fairy tales. Putting women at the center, these stories deal with taboos, sex and death!
I really thought this book was unique and interesting. Full of macabre and strange tales, Apple and Knife portrays women that aren’t scared to get the job done! But I must admit that I am coming to terms with the fact that I am not the best reader of short story collections. I don’t know why but I keep buying/accepting them. Somehow, I feel like I should be enjoying them because they’re often very well-written and well-developed. At least, the ones I read. But when I'm actually reading them, it's very hard for me to stay focused. Sometimes, I am completely in love with a tale and then, after a few pages, it’s over. That happened to me with this book. This proves the tales are good but the format doesn’t work for me. I need more time with the story and characters, I guess. I think I am going to start reading less and less short story collections, I’m afraid.

Do you depend on me, or do you refuse to let me go because I’m a brittle hair, easily uprooted from your scalp and swept away? Are you afraid of losing me?
My first read from intan paramaditha and to say I was pleased is an understatement!!
Dark, gruesome, unsettling and horrifyin are the adjectives that I think are suitable to describe how this collection of short stories made me feel.
Inspired from horror folktales with thought-provoking twists and social critique–this collection of short stories shed the light on a lot of systematic issues like beauty standards, religion ,patriarchy, women's bodily anatomy and the sacrifices and stereotypical roles that come for being a woman.
My favorite stories were: "blood", "scream in a bottle" and "the queen" I wish I could talk about the stories in depth, but I fear I would end up spoiling them in the process :')
Check trigger warnings before you start reading pls

mixed feelings abt this one but maybe bc i didn’t read it in its original language, so a lot of it were lost in the translations. i did enjoy some of the stories, like Blood, Doors, and The Porcelain Doll, but some of them were kinda confusing (again, might be bc of the language)
Some of these stories were incredible - others, not so much. Overall a great collection of gothic feminist fairytales.
