4 stars, with a caveat.

Bravey is one of the most meaningful and touching memoirs I have ever had the chance to read. That being said, I think it is this touching to a very small niche group of people. Pappas made me feel seen in a way I didn’t know could occur. The “Always Try Hard” rule callout let me realize that sometimes it is okay to not finish the day with a headache from working so hard lols.

I cried, I felt all the emotions, and would recommend this (to a small, select group that would appreciate it).

Alexi has been someone I looked at as a role model since middle school. I first knew about her because of her running career, but fell in love with her creative and inspiring personality.
This book is so relatable and real. She covers being a young female athlete, but she covers so much more than that. Her voice is very unique and from her university-age poetry, to her films, to thus book, and whatever she comes up with in the future, I'll always want to hear from her.

A good sports memoir because she doesn't just stick to sports. Goes into her mental health and her relationship with her mother. An inspiring read.

This book was simultaneously heartwarming and heartbreaking. I feel she described her depression in an honest, relatable way that really struck a chord with me. Also, I am glad she went into detail about what young female athletes go through. I think this would be a great book for a teen athlete. There are things she discussed (like delayed puberty) that I had never even considered. I enjoyed her philosophy on working hard but not beating yourself up. Again, I think this is a great book for young women!

I really wanted to like this book, but something about it came across as very immature. There was something about how things were written that felt disingenuous, self important, and/or written because the author was trying to force a specific response from her reader.

The detail in which she described her mom trying to saw off her own arm and the whole chapter on lice, felt out of place and left me feeling icky.
