This dark romantasy (romantic fantasy) has it all! Fierce warrior, brooding commander, stabbing, betrayal, found families, friendship, a horse, intrigue, love, lust and everything in between. There's a creepy mist that only the bravest (or maybe foolish) dare venture out into. The kingdom is on the verge of collapse to the dark shadows, but can they figure out how to kill it, or will they die trying? There's an interesting legend/mythology in this world to go along with the magic system. It was a fast and engaging read and I look forward to seeing how the story develops.

I picked this up because of the gorgeous cover.  Then I listened to it as an audio.  That may have my issue.  I liked it.  I didn't love it.
The characters were fine and I liked the idea of the storyline.  It just fell somewhat short for me.    Really there was nothing wrong with it.  It was well written and executed, it just didnt hold my attention like I had hoped.  I may not have been in the right headspace or the right reader for this.
Having said that, I'll totally read another Katherine Quinn book again.  She definitely had a good story, and the execution was good.

Really enjoyed this one. Will be continuing the series.

It was like a half sibling to Throne of Glass. Different enough, but yet there were some similarities. Some vampire like beasts, betrayal, and mystery.

I liked the dual POV and the mysterious notes at every chapter.

The ending? Well, it ended in a way that required a next book. I don't like it when books force a 2nd book. This didn't feel this way.

Boring. Author lost the plot. Too fast paced to the point it wasn't logical in the setting for the time line of events.

Overall, the book tired too hard and needed some content editing.

Very slow to start, pacing is odd. Obvious secrets and theories to be uncovered but felt like some of them should have been revealed a bit sooner as I almost DNF’d the book. Glad I did not as the ending was excellent and I did not expect the little twist. If you like books with secrets, gods playing in mortal realms and strong characters would be a good choice if you can force yourself through the first 2/3rds. I am hopeful that the next book will be better.
