I loved the first 40% of this book. It starts off strong with high stakes, lots of action, building the found family, FMC and MMC tension! But around the halfway point it lost my attention because it became repetitive. Most of the second half is the FMC and MMC on a quest together and it was too much of only those characters for me. I needed more of the side character interactions and scenes with the FMC without the MMC. Even when the MMC was not physically there, he was on the FMC's mind- it was too much.
There was very little character development. And the relationships were very insta-love. Not just the relationship between the FMC and MMC (which could be explained by their bond) but between the FMC and her new friends that she comes to see as brothers instantly. Not super believable without seeing them develop that bond on page. Also, FMC is the only female character.... so that's disappointing.
Thank you to NetGalley and Entangled Publishing for providing an eARC of this book.

I have to admit, this one took a few chapters to get into and only because there is a lot of world building and character building right at the start! But once the romance kicks in and Kiara finds her way in the Knights, SO GOOD!
I also loved that the Mist is literally its own country/area at the moment and it’s all unknown for the most part. It keeps all the characters and yourself as the reader on your toes the whole time!
There’s gore, killing, and some really good description of the beasts/animals, so just be prepared for that! But I think it helps with the depiction of the story in your head!
Not much romance, which for a YA I appreciated it! Just enough that you can understand the feelings between Kiara and Jude.
And let’s talk about the ending, WHAT?! I have so many questions.. but I won’t spoil them here. I need to talk to some asap about it!

Thanks to Entangled Teen for the copy of this book!
Reminiscent of Shadow & Bone, To Kill a Shadow is heavy on the romance and horror side of YA romantasy reads.
Kiara meets Jude when she goes from being an outcast in her village to being selected as one of the recruits for the Knights of the Eternal Star. Their forbidden romance is instantaneous as they face the perils of the mist, and I thought their chemistry was really well done. There are quite a few battles in the name of trying to save the kingdom, but overall I would’ve liked a little more background on the gods and the mist. Katherine leaves us with quite the cliffhanger at the end, so put book two on your radar, too!

I wanted to love this book, but in the end, I didn't.
I felt like we were given not enough information about the world-building and I often felt like I was missing something. The characters lacked that characterization I enjoy and they felt rather flat to me. I couldn't really empathize with any of them and it was definitely a letdown.
The plot was the most interesting part of this book, but without the proper world-building, it didn't live up to its potential.
The thing I loved the most is the character arc story of Patrick, a character I didn't really care for at the beginning, but who became more interesting towards the end.
The found family trope: an example of a badly written one. I felt like Kiara finding so many friends who felt like a family was just too forced. And finally, the love story: I wished there was none. This book had a lot of potential, which I truly hope will be developed in the next installment.

I really want to like this book more than I did. I think the plot was really interesting. The characters, though…oof. I hated all of them. 1 dimensional supporting cast and 2 mains who I struggled to care about. I will probably still read the next book in the series anyway just because of the plot - I’d like to see how things resolve.
Not my favorite book, but a fairly quick read if you can get past the main characters and their brooding and whining.
