Doctor Who. Classic Who um genau zu sein; von Douglas Adamas… Besser geht es fast gar nicht! Es ist immer wieder faszinierend wie Douglas Adams es schafft seinem typischen Humor, als auch den Charakteren treu zu bleiben. In diesem Fall dem vierten Doctor und Romana II.

Der Plot an sich… nun, sagen wir es mal so: Wenn man keine Ahnung von Shada hat, es vorher weder gesehen noch die Audiobooks gehört hat, wird man sicher die ein oder andere Überraschung erleben, ganz zu schweigen von 2 – 3 Plot-Twists.

Ansonsten kann ich nur sagen was ich bereits zu den anderen Adaptionen gesagt habe: Der Plot ist und bleib unverwechselbar. Zwar gab es bereits mehrere Episoden (Sowohl in der TV Serie, als auch von Big Finish) die in die selbe Richtung einschlagen, aber keiner hat es, meiner Meinung nach, so gut gemeistert wie Adams.

Ein besonderer Pluspunkt ist dass, obwohl ein solch großes… (ähm… um es Spoilerfrei zu halten nennen wir es mal ‚Thema’…) Thema angeht, dadurch sich absolut nichts (quasi) am bisherigen und noch am kommenden Canon ändert, aber die Tür weit offen lässt, so dass sich andere an diesem Thema bedienen können. Das schaffen leider nicht alle Who-Autoren, weswegen es auch häufiger hitzige Diskussionen in der Community gibt. Ja, gut, die gibt es immer irgendwie, aber ihr wisst was ich meine… Und ja, ich bin immer heiß drauf wenn es um dieses Thema geht aber… aber… das hat damit nichts zu tun!

Kommen wir zu den drei wichtigsten Fragen:
1. Kann man das Buch lesen ohne Classic Who, insbesondere die Era des vierten Doctors zu kennen?
Ja! Es werden zwar Dinge erwähnt die der Doctor und Romana erlebt haben, diese sind aber nicht weiter wichtig für die Geschichte.

2. Kann ich das Buch auch lesen wenn ich Doctor Who noch nie geschaut habe?
Jein?! Theoretisch geht es, wenn man sich damit abfinden kann dass verschiedene Dinge die erwähnt werden wohl wenig bis gar keinen Sinn ergeben. Zudem wird der Plot um einiges weniger „skandalös“ ist. Wenn das ok ist, kann man es ohne Bedenken auch als Nicht-Whovian lesen.

As long as you have an idea what to expect from a Doctor Who book, you'll be fine with this one.
It captures the feel of the series, as it well should given the two authors, and tells a satisfactory story with enough complexity to make it worth the reading time.

But then Tom Baker was my favourite Doctor until Tennant & Smith.

Wonderful adaptation, Gareth Roberts did a fine job of maintaining the Douglas Adams vibe.

So much fun. Perfect depiction of the fourth doctor and retaining the humor of Douglas Adams. Great read!

Shada opens with a visit to Cambridge University in England, where a young scientist hoping to impress a potential girlfriend borrows an unusual book from one of his professors. The book, of course, turns out to be an ancient Time Lord Artifact, and the usual Fourth Doctor high jinks and almost-universe-ending chaos ensue. It's a fun read that feels very true to the Tom Baker version of the original TV show.

Dire che sono una Whovian, chi mi conosce lo sa, è riduttivo. La mia conoscenza delle serie classiche non è buona: ho tutta la teoria ma mi manca la pratica, ovvero ho nozione di chi è cosa ma non ho visto le puntate. Tom Baker in ogni caso è un gran signore oggi che è un anziano vecchietto, e quando era un giovane quarantenne tutto occhi, tutto capelli, tutto sorrisone e tutta sciarpa, era anche splendido (sotto tanti aspetti, non parlo certo di estetica). Stiamo poi parlando di Douglas Adams, di cui ahimè ancora non mi sono letta niente ma di cui ho visto l'adattamento in film della Guida Galattica per Autostoppisti. Gareth Roberts, che è uno sceneggiatore molto bravo, ha fatto un lavoro sapiente nel riprendere il materiale lasciato da Douglas Adams e ha creato un'avventura interessante, divertente, piena di colpi di scena e anche di drama, in uno stile scorrevole e accattivante. Shada è un gioiellino e andrebbe letto da ogni fan del Dottore e di Douglas Adams, e soprattutto da chi è entrambe le cose!
Ricordatevi l'asciugamano!
